Cinderella Blu-ray Movie Review
Reviewed by Randy Miller III June 29, 2019Released on the same day as Disney's standard Anniversary Edition combo pack (with no 4K option, unfortunately), this Digipak Collector's Edition of Walt Disney's Cinderella is exclusive to Target, both in-store and online. It's a very classy design that should appeal to collectors and includes a handsome "Filmmaker Gallery and Storybook" with concept artwork, an abridged print version, and other items, although on-disc and digital content is identical to the standard Blu-ray. Similarly priced to its regular counterpart, this is a low-risk upgrade that won't last long.

To read my colleague Kenneth Brown's take on the film, please refer to his 2012 review of Disney's Diamond Edition Blu-ray. Please note that the movie rating of this review represents my own opinion of Cinderella; although countless iterations of the original folk tale exist (including Disney's surprisingly good live-action remake, just released in 4K), this 1950 classic is still a beautifully animated, worthwhile adventure that should appeal to kids of all ages.

Cinderella Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras

This two-disc release is housed in a colorful fold-out Digipak case with individual hubs for each disc. After removing the outer slipcover and descriptive J-card, the inside case features beautiful pastel drawings and paintings of several characters and locations in the film, many of which come from the 2016 book The Walt Disney Film Archives: The Animated Movies, 1921-1968 Both discs feature designs identical to the standard Anniversary Edition.
Also tucked inside is a Digital Copy redemption slip (with Disney Rewards points), as well as a square-bound Gallery Book with glossy pages and a nice cover illustration of Cinderella's pumpkin carriage.
- Gallery Book - This 36-page book, sized about a quarter-inch smaller on all sides than the Blu-ray package, features lots of behind-the-scenes photos (including comparisons between model photos and final artwork), illustrations, concept art, and comments by industry professionals such as Brad Bird (The Iron Giant), Brenda Chapman (Brave ), Eric Goldberg (Pocahontas), and Pete Docter (Inside Out). As with past Target-exclusive Disney releases, the pages are thick and glossy with classy design elements and easy-to-read text.
For a detailed breakdown of the on-disc and digital content (which differs quite a bit from the 2012 Diamond Edition), please refer to Martin Liebman's recent review of the standard Anniversary Edition Blu-ray.
Cinderella Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation

The 2019 re-release of Walt Disney's Cinderella on Blu-ray is more a celebration of its recent induction into the National Film Registry than its upcoming 70th birthday next year. Whatever the reason, it's a somewhat disappointing party due to the lack of a 4K option -- but at the very least, the Anniversary Edition Blu-ray offers a slightly different experience than Disney's 2012 Diamond Edition (not so much from an A/V perspective, just in the way of supplements). Target's Limited Edition version of this re-release is in a unique position to add to those differences with beautiful packaging that feels as classy and substantial as their other recent Disney exclusives. For that reason it comes with a slightly stronger recommendation than most in this narrow category, and even more so if you don't own Cinderella on Blu-ray yet.
