Black Clover: Season 3, Part 5 Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Neil Lumbard February 24, 2023

Black Clover: Season 3, Part 5 provides the final installments of the third season of the epic action-anime production. The third season expands on the popular action franchise. The series is produced by Naomi Komatsu, Masahiro Sugasawa, and Naomi Komatsu. Originally broadcast on television on the TV Tokyo network in Japan, Black Clover became a popular hit series on the Cartoon Network Toonami anime block. The third season provides more exciting adventure. Distributed by Funimation, Black Clover Season 3 features animation produced by Pierrot (Polar Bear Café, Hikaru no Go).

The conclusion of the third season of Black Clover has arrived. The penultimate season finds its closing moments have arrived. The action quotient is as high as ever with the characters facing even more challenges along the road to victory. Dazu faces unexpected change when a violent side of him is unleashed following the Magic Knights failure to save Tiulyu. Dazu wishes for nothing more than revenge.

The entire kingdom faces a period of unrest and the threat of war makes things all the more complicated. Deciding to aim for unity in the kingdom, the Wizard King has a mission to unite the people: the only question is, can the Wizard King succeed to bring unity? Can the war be prevented or will an all-out attack be the only solution to achieve lasting peace?

At the core of the third season, the series remains a popular success because of the cast of characters. The characters certainly are essential to the production and to why audiences gravitated towards the series. The journey of the Magic Knights is something that provides audiences with plenty of fun and exciting energy – with the journey of Asta something that is particularly essential to Black Clover and its success. Asta is such an airheaded character at times but the headstrong will and determination to find success is something that is charming and relatable.

Black Clover Season 3 features writing by head scriptwriter Kazuyuki Fudeyasu (ClaymoreBeyblade). The screenplays are sometimes one of the more inconsistent elements of the production but even despite this shortcoming, Fudeyasu crafts a fun tale with good action and giving time for the main characters to shine.

Tatsuya Yoshihara (Yatterman Night, Muromi-san) remains steadfast in the role as chief director. The series is a visual confection. Yoshihara imbues the production with a nice sense of style and plenty of energy too. Black Clover offers the right combination of charm, spectacle, and action for the fans to enjoy. Black Clover Season 3 is entertaining fun and series devotees will be pleased.

Black Clover: Season 3, Part 5 Blu-ray Movie, Video Quality  4.5 of 5

Arriving on Blu-ray from Funimation, Black Clover – Season 3, Part 5 is presented in 1080p MPEG-4 AVC encoded high definition in the original television broadcast aspect ratio of 1.78:1 widescreen. The set provides excellent high-definition visuals. The encoding from Funimation is excellent and there is an impressive sense of depth to the presentation. Detail is superb and the line art looks better than a streaming presentation could provide. The presentation has great clarity and the encode has a good bit-rate. The Blu-ray version offers superior bit- rates and encoding compared to streaming options. Purchasers should feel confident that the presentation is far superior to sub-par and lackluster streaming versions – which often have significantly reduced bit-rates and more compression woes compared to the far-superior disc options. Another solid presentation from Funimation.

Black Clover: Season 3, Part 5 Blu-ray Movie, Audio Quality  4.5 of 5

The release provides a selection of lossless audio options: English Dolby TrueHD 5.1 surround sound and Japanese Dolby TrueHD 2.0 stereo (with English subtitles). The lossless, high resolution audio tracks are significantly better than streaming alternative. The English track benefits from the surround sound and the Japanese language version might be limited to stereo audio but will be more satisfactory for audio purists seeking the original language version. The lossless audio is a big improvement over any sub-par offerings available on streaming services such as Crunchyroll and others. The streaming versions are always paltry by comparison and are limited to bit-rates often around 320kbps and the Blu-ray versions offer significantly superior presentations – the kind any audiophile will appreciate as the audio improvement is significant – every dramatic moment has a better sense of depth and immersion with the disc versions.

Black Clover: Season 3, Part 5 Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  3.5 of 5

Black Clover: Season 3, Part 5 continues and concludes the action-packed adventure of Season 3. The exciting adventures of the Magic Knights continue to reward enthusiasts. The end of the season has arrived with this collection. The Blu-ray release from Funimation includes an impressive video and audio presentation. The supplemental package includes the second part of the Black Clover   Season 3 voice actor panel. The Season 3, Part 4 collection included part one and the Black Clover: Season 3, Part 5 set has the additional material – providing fans with more behind-the-scenes material with the voice cast. This is a great add on for voice actor fans who are enthusiastic about the cast and enjoy their contributions to the production. Recommended.
