Beverly Hills Cop Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Martin Liebman January 9, 2020

Paramount originally released the hit 1984 film 'Beverly Hills Cop' to Blu-ray on May 7, 2011. That disc was tepidly received for its video, audio, and supplemental content. For this new Blu-ray release, the studio has remastered the film in 4K. Audio appears virtually unchanged, but several new supplements have been added and none have been removed. See below for coverage of various new items in this release, which is currently only available in a bundle with both 'Beverly Hills Cop II' and 'Beverly Hills Cop III.'

Axel Foley (Eddie Murphy) is a slick, smooth-talking Detroit detective whose disobedience and disregard for procedure has once again landed him in hot water with his Chief, and a promising career is on the brink of disintegration. Foley returns home to find someone in his house, unexpectedly. Turns out it's an old friend named Mickey (James Russo) who's out of prison and back home to share his news with Foley: he's been working in Beverly Hills where he's managed to get his hands on thousands of dollars worth of untraceable German bonds. The only problem is that a pair of Beverly Hills thugs are on to him. Mickey is shot and killed in front of Foley, who is refused the opportunity to take the case and avenge his friend's death. Instead, Foley takes a vacation to Beverly Hills where he meets up with an old friend and Mickey's one-time employer Jenny (Lisa Eilbacher). It doesn't take long for Foley to sniff out the trail that leads to local crime lord Victor Maitland (Steven Berkoff) and his profitable dope operation. Unfortunately, Foley finds himself in hot water with the local law; Beverly Hills Police Lieutenant Andrew Bogomil (Ronny Cox) wants him out of town, so Foley turns to local Detectives John Taggart (John Ashton) and Billy Rosewood (Judge Reinhold) for help, but he has to convince them of the validity of his case and that he's trustworthy enough to put their lives on the line for what will be a potentially deadly bust.

Beverly Hills Cop Blu-ray Movie, Video Quality  4.5 of 5

This 2019 Blu-ray release of Beverly Hills Cop is sourced from a new 4K remaster, but a UHD release of one the quintessential 1980s films is currently nowhere to be found. That's a disappointment, but what isn't a disappointment is the Blu-ray, which delivers a solid upgrade over the existing Blu-ray released back in 2011. The picture quality is firm and authentic, boasting a nicely resolved and consistent grain structure. It's a bit heavier than some viewers more accustomed to clean digital imagery might prefer, but it is flattering and seems relatively true to the source. The picture appears organically textured and naturally sharp, finding quality skin details that showcase fine definition with screen-commanding efficiency. Clothing enjoys robust efficiency, whether scruffy jeans and t-shirts or high dollar suits and other Beverly Hills apparel. Likewise, environments are firm and clear, with classy Beverly Hills locales amongst the most prominent visual highlights. Comparing to the previous Blu-ray, colors are more naturally inclined. The picture is not quite so dark as it was previously. Additionally, grain is managed in a superior fashion, more even and organic and less clumpy. The picture appears without the artificial sharpening that was apparent in the prior release, allowing the inherent resolution and natural textures to shine.

Beverly Hills Cop Blu-ray Movie, Audio Quality  3.0 of 5

Beverly Hills Cop's newest release contains a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 lossless soundtrack, just as did its predecessor. There appears to be no major alterations to the listening experience. It is perhaps a little more aggressive but fundamentally sounds unchanged in terms of placement, detail, and the like. For a full audio review, please click here.

Beverly Hills Cop Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras  3.5 of 5

Paramount's remastered Blu-ray release of Beverly Hills Cop contains a blend of new and returning supplements (all legacy Blu-ray extras are included). Below is a list of what's included. New extras are marked as such and reviewed. For coverage of the carryover content, please click here. As the disc ships with the three-pack linked at the top of this review, no DVDs or digital codes are included with purchase. The collection does ship with a non-embossed slipcover.

  • Audio Commentary: Director Martin Brest.
  • NEW! Isolated Score Track: All audio but the score has been removed from the movie. Presented in Dolby Digital 5.1.
  • NEW! Deleted Scenes (1080p): Included are a pair of scenes: You Might Be on the Right Track (2:18) and Axel Gets Ready for Beverly Hills (1:31). The scenes are presented in fairly raw condition within a windowbox framed to look like a film strip.
  • NEW! Behind the Scenes: 1984 Interviews (1080p): Axel's Wild Ride (0:46) features Murphy discussing the movie's pace. Detroit Cops vs. Beverly Hills Cops (1:31) again highlights Murphy joined with Brest to discuss the contrasting styles of the cops depicted in the film. Eddie's Impromptu Lines (2:34) features Brest talking about the script and Murphy's improvisations, highlighting a key scene in which Foley cons his way into a private club. Finally, in Taggart and Rosewood (1:57), Brest talks up this pair, which he calls a modern-day Laurel and Hardy. Film clips are, like the deleted scenes, presented to appear as if on a film strip.

  • The Music of Beverly Hills Cop
  • Location Map
  • Theatrical Trailer
  • NEW! BHC Mixtape '84 (1080p, DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1): Musical clips from the film. Included are The Heat Is On (1:59), Neutron Dance (3:28), New Attitude (1:04), Do You Really (1:16), Stir it Up (4:45), and Nasty Girl (3:30).

Beverly Hills Cop Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  4.0 of 5

Beverly Hills Cop is one of the more memorable of many great 80s films, and Paramount has finally given it a proper Blu-ray release. Video is sourced from a new 4K remaster and it looks quite good. Why Paramount didn't release a UHD set is unclear, but fans should be more than satisfied with the Blu-ray, particularly with the add to the supplemental content. Highly recommended.
