Overview

Beauty and the Beast 4K (1991)

In a quaint French village during the late 18th century, Belle, a bright and beautiful young woman, finds escape from her ordinary life, and the advances of a boorish suitor, Gaston, by reading books. Meanwhile, off in a castle in the distance, a cruel young prince is cast under the spell of an enchantress who turns him into a tormented beast, while transforming his servants into animated household objects. In order to remove the curse, the Beast must discover a true love who will return his affection before the last petal falls from an enchanted rose. When Belle’s inventor father stumbles upon the Beast’s castle and is taken prisoner, Belle comes to the rescue and agrees to take her father’s place. With the help of the castle’s enchanted staff, she sees beneath the Beast’s exterior and discovers the heart and soul of a human prince.

Beauty and the Beast 4K Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Martin Liebman March 19, 2020

Disney and Best Buy have collaborated on a store exclusive SteelBook release for the Oscar nominated 1991 animated masterpiece 'Beauty and the Beast.' The disc and digital content is identical to that found in the wide release. See the 'Special Features and Extras' section of the review below for more on the SteelBook's look and feel.

Beauty and the Beast 4K Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras  3.5 of 5

The light gray-dominant front side depicts a stained glass window type of artwork. The only splash of color is the rose, center, with its pink petals and green leaves and stem. A circular blue background appears behind, with an additional layer of pink around the periphery. There is some ornate artwork around the rose, breaking up the gray in crudely circular patterns intermixed with tilted vertical straight lines as well. Though not plainly obvious at-a-glance, it is clear that there's a hand holding the rose, with long, gangly fingernails. The rose is being held by the thumb and index finger by the looks of it. The rear panel depicts a beautifully subdued image of Belle and Beast dancing in silhouette. The rear panel is essentially black with light illumination to highlight the dancers in purply pastels. It's gorgeous and worthy of wall art. Both front and rear panels are smooth and glossy and will show fingerprints, the rear in particular. The spine is a pleasantly dark blue color depicting the film's title in white, center, accompanied by "Disney." An UltraHD logo appears at the top and a Disney logo at the bottom, both also in white.

Inside, the digital copy code is tucked underneath the left-hand-side tabs. The two discs, one UHD and one Blu-ray, are situated on the right in staggered-stacked formation. The inner print is a two-panel spread that features Belle and the Beast dancing, a still from the picture's most iconic sequence, occurring late in the film. The characters appear predominantly on the right underneath the discs, but Beast's right arm does stretch over to the left panel, which is otherwise ballroom floor and background.

Beauty and the Beast 4K Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  4.5 of 5

Beauty and the Beast is, in this reviewer's humble opinion, the finest animated film Disney has ever created. It's worthy of a world-class SteelBook and it kind of gets it here. The artwork is attractive but a bit too gray on the front for a film of otherwise resplendent color, but the rest of it is quite attractive. The on-disc content is excellent, too. This release earns my highest recommendation.
