Overview

Attack on Titan: Season 3 - Part 1 (2018)

Many years ago, the last remnants of humanity were forced to retreat behind the towering walls of a fortified city to escape the massive, man-eating Titans that roamed the land outside their fortress. Only the heroic members of the Scouting Legion dared to stray beyond the safety of the walls -- but even those brave warriors seldom returned alive. Those within the city clung to the illusion of a peaceful existence until the day that dream was shattered, and their slim chance at survival was reduced to one horrifying choice: kill -- or be devoured!

Attack on Titan: Season 3 - Part 1 Blu-ray Movie Review

The action continues.

Reviewed by Neil Lumbard January 22, 2022

Attack on Titan is one of the most exciting and action-packed anime series of all time. Created by Hajime Isayama, Attack on Titan is a non-stop roller-coaster ride with plenty of excitement. A fan favorite anime for a reason, Attack on Titan is an edge-of-your-seat adventure with plenty to offer audiences.

The series is produced by George Wada (Kimi ni Todoke – From Me to You, Psycho-Pass), Kensuke Tateishi (A Silent Voice, Flowers of Evil), Shin Furukawa (Fullmetal Alchemist: The Sacred Star of Milos, The Quintessential Quintuplets), Teppei Nojima (Release the Spyce, Riddle Story of Devil), Tetsuya Kinoshita (Blade of the Immortal, The Rolling Girls), Tomohito Nagase (One Week Friends, Outbreak Company), and Toshihiro Maeda (Domestic Girlfriend, Star Blazers 2199). Attack on Titan succeeds as must-see television (anime or otherwise). Fans of action-packed fun won't want to miss out.

Things escalate when the mystery behind the larger-than-life Titans begins to take center stage in the story. As the heroes of the story are thrust in to new situations, Eren and his accompanying comrades must face a series of new challenges ahead. As battle looms, the Titan monsters continue to threaten humanity: everything is at stake. Upon returning to Shiganshina, the Titans are faced down by Eren, Armin, and Mikasa. Can the heroes take back control of Wall Maria before it is too late?

The characters are central to the story and its building universe. Eren is one of the most important characters on the show. The focus on exploring the lead characters is essential to the journey. The character storytelling is something remarkable – special – and ultimately profound. This is one key reason why the action-packed series is so engaging.

The animation on Attack on Titan is stellar throughout. Under the art direction of Shunichiro Yoshihara (JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, Macross Frontier), Attack on Titan is a beautifully animated gem with so much to offer audiences. The background artwork is highly detailed and creative to behold. The line art is impressive and fits the production well. The tone of Attack on Titan and its genre roots is conveyed well.

The start of the third season saga.

The anime benefits from having superb character designs by Kyoji Asano (Psycho-Pass, Tokyo Marble Chocolate). The designs are exquisite and make a huge impression – aiding the series success. This is certainly a series that has distinctive style and the character designs are no exception to that rule. The characters seem unique and creative – a sign of great designs. Asano did a stellar job in this regard.

The cinematography by Kazuhiro Yamada (Samurai Champloo, Ergo Proxy) is outstanding: brilliant and mesmerizing. Yamada is one of the best cinematographers in the anime industry. A true artist, Attack on Titan excels with a dark and brooding atmosphere accompanied by plenty of style. A exceptional effort and one that showcases the great talents of Yamada.

The original music composed by Hiroyuki Sawano (Blue Exorcist, Kill la Kill) is top-notch as well. Exciting, action-packed, and enormously fun, Sawano does a good job of highlighting the action-packed adventure. The score is creative and has plenty of creative energy. The music highlights everything from the monster-mayhem to the quieter character moments.

Written by Yasuko Kobayashi (Death Note, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure), Attack on Titan is a distinctive series with entertaining storytelling. Kobayashi makes the epic odyssey thrilling. There is a lot worth appreciating here.

Tetsuro Araki (High School of the Dead, Death Note) brings Attack on Titan to life in the director's chair. Attack on Titan is such an ambitious production and one with such an enormous sense of scale – and not only because of the Titan monsters the heroes of the tale face. Araki is a superb director who brings forth a distinctive vision. Worth checking out for genre enthusiasts.
