Aquaman 4K (2018)

Once home to the most advanced civilization on Earth, the city of Atlantis is now an underwater kingdom ruled by the power-hungry King Orm. With a vast army at his disposal, Orm plans to conquer the remaining oceanic people -- and then the surface world. Aquaman 4K Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Martin Liebman March 26, 2019

Warner Brothers and Best Buy have collaborated on a store exclusive SteelBook release for the hit DC Extended Universe film 'Aquaman.' This two-disc UHD set contains the same content as that which ships in wide release packaging. See the 'Special Features and Extras' tab below for more on the SteelBook's look and feel.

Aquaman 4K Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras  3.0 of 5

Aquaman's SteelBook follows established DCEU SteelBook tradition by offering a hand-drawn front cover image that stylistically fits with its companion films: Man of Steel, Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, Suicide Squad, Wonder Woman, and Justice League (there have since been alternate artwork SteelBook releases for Suicide Squad, Wonder Woman, and Justice League). The front image is relatively simple, depicting an angry looking, almost Wolverine-inspired take on Jason Momoa's title character. Aquaman appears fierce, Trident of Atlan in hand, leaning forward, and ready to strike. Mera appears in the background, to Aquaman's left and the SteelBook's right, also looking more than a little irritated and ready to support the half-breed hero in battle. The two are floating underwater, near the surface by the looks of things. A little plant life appears bottom-left and what appears to be a Manta Ray swims bottom-right, behind Mera. The film's title appears centered but below the middle X-axis. The letter "A" is encased in the "Aquaman" symbol, which also holds the DC lettering. The rear side is about as simple as things get. It's almost entirely glossy black with a trident shape cut into it. Water appears in the space where the trident has been removed from the surrounding black. The spine carries over the front's watery background, leaving an aqua-colored background for the film's title, which appears center in white lettering. DC and Warner Brothers logos appear at the bottom. The entire SteelBook's outer surface, and the rear side in particular, will show fingerprints.

Inside, the digital copy code is situated underneath the left-hand side tabs. The two discs, one Blu-ray and one UHD, are housed on the right in staggered-stacked formation. The inner print is a two-panel spread that depicts the Council of the Kings, where two undersea factions, led by Nereus and Orm, first meet to discuss declaring war on the surface. The statues are covered in rusticles and other overgrowth, and a number of sea creatures fill in the space below. It's a little hard to see in lower light but looks great when well lit. An unobtrusive billing block appears bottom left, customary for Warner Brothers SteelBooks. Disc artwork is fairly bland, with the Blu-ray a blue color and the UHD an aqua color, both featuring a trident image, each otherwise largely indistinguishable beyond a few printed details. They get the job done.

Aquaman 4K Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  3.5 of 5

Aquaman's SteelBook is a solid effort, hardly the finest on the market and not even tops against the DCEU varieties (for this reviewer's money, Man of Steel and Justice League still reign at the top). Still, it fits well with the theme. On-disc content is terrific, too. Highly recommended. Bring on Shazam!
