Hellboy 4K Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Martin Liebman September 4, 2019

Lionsgate and Best Buy have collaborated on a store exclusive SteelBook release for 2019's 'Hellboy.' The disc and digital content is identical to that found in the wide release. See the 'Special Features and Extras' section of the review below for more on the SteelBook's look and feel.

Hellboy's SteelBook is of the more desirable material type, at least to this reviewer's eyes and in this reviewer's hands. It's a little more grippy rather than the smooth and glossy and fingerprint-prone SteelBooks that dominate the market. The front image is hand-drawn, showing a Hellboy who appears somewhat uninterested, almost irritated to be posing for the portrait. It's a vertically oriented, almost droopy looking depiction. A full moon peers out from behind his head while a tree branch extends behind and leaves float gently through the air. The rear side is similarly designed, minus the title character, with the branches and leaves the focal point, maintaining the same silvery sky color seen on the front. A little legalese appears unobtrusively at the bottom. The spine maintains that silver color but without the distractions of falling leaves. The film's title appears center. A Lionsgate logo is situated at the bottom.

Inside, the digital copy code is tucked underneath the left-hand-side tabs. The two discs, one UHD and one Blu-ray, are each situated on their own hub on the left and right panels; why other studios don't follow this practice is a mystery. The inner print is a two-panel spread that features more of the same silver sky/tree branch/falling leaves imagery as found on the front and back.

Hellboy 4K Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  3.0 of 5

Simplicity and consistency of style defines the 2019 Hellboy SteelBook. It's attractive in its adherence to a shared vision and it certainly makes for a desirable packaging option. The UHD technical presentation is excellent, too. Recommended.
