American Pie 2 4K Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Justin Dekker August 6, 2026

The second installment of the raunchy coming-of-age comedy series, 'American Pie 2' arrives on 4K UHD disc courtesy of Universal. The film sees the return of the original cast including Jim (Jason Biggs), Finch (Eddie Kaye Thomas), Oz (Chris Klein), and Kevin (Thomas Ian Nicholas), along with Tara Reid (Vicky, 'The Big Lebowski') Alyson Hannigan (Michelle, 'How I Met Your Mother'), Shannon Elizabeth (Nadia, 'A Home for the Holidays'), and Natasha Lyonne (Jessica, 'Poker Face'). Given a solid 2160p presentation, the film is accompanied by the DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 found on the 2012 Blu-ray release. All of the meaningful legacy on-disc supplemental material has been brought forward here, but no new extras have been created. A Blu-ray disc and a Digital Code Redeemable via Movies Anywhere are also included.

For an appreciation of the film, please follow this link to my colleague Brian Orndorf's review of the original Blu-ray release from 2012.

American Pie 2 4K Blu-ray Movie, Video Quality  3.5 of 5

The 2012 Blu-ray release of American Pie 2 was not particularly well-received, being referred to dark, muted, and generally unconvincing. The situation here is generally improved but not perfect. Overall, the film's 4K presentation with Dolby Vision is a bit brighter across the board, with pleasing detail levels, especially in close-up and mid-range shots. Most often, fine lines and make-up particulars are observable, as are fly-away hairs and stubble. Though, at other times, faces can look a bit smooth and waxy. Fabrics, such as Michelle's fuzzy pink sweatshirt and the ribbing of the casts' t-shirts can impress and present with solid tactile presence. Environmental details are also discernable such as the texture of painted window sills, and the stone steps of the outdoor amphitheater at the Tall Oaks Band Camp, which often look sharp and crisp. But at other times, there can be a certain frustrating softness present in mid-range and longer shots which suggests more than it defines and explicitly shows, with foliage being smudgy, and stonework forfeiting detail. Skin tones are improved looking much more healthy and realistic. Colors are better-saturated and stable, but still do not present with the level of pop some may have anticipated, and there remains a certain dullness, though reds, in particular, can at times look quite good. The handful of process shots in the film, such as Nadia's phone call on the streets of New York City, still look suspect and aren't helped by an uptick in resolution. The transfer is, in a word, frustrating, and seems very much in keeping with the overall results achieved with Universal's 4K release of the first film from the series. Are things improved? Certainly. But, based on what I'm seeing here there is room yet room for more gains than what have been realized here.

American Pie 2 4K Blu-ray Movie, Audio Quality  4.0 of 5

As with their previous reissue of American Pie 4K Universal repurposes the DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 from the 2012 Blu-ray release. For thoughts regarding that track please follow this link to the Blu-ray release.

American Pie 2 4K Blu-ray Movie, Special Features and Extras  3.0 of 5

Three supplemental features present on the previous Blu-ray release are not brought forward to the 4K UHD disc. They are: "American Reunion: A Look Inside", the "Be Like That" music video, and a Theatrical Trailer with a Jason Biggs introduction. All other legacy features are included and a full accounting of them can be found here.

American Pie 2 4K Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  3.5 of 5

As far as sex comedies go, American Pie 2 keeps things light and breezy for the majority of the film's runtime. While there is a certain amount of heart, self-realization, and character growth on display in the film's final act, make no mistake, the tale's stock and trade is the raunchy misadventures of the young men that comprise the primary cast. While some movies from this genre don't age particularly well, American Pie 2 holds its own with the now more than two decades old scenarios, sight gags, and jokes landing as well today as they did upon the film's initial release. While not a perfect release, there is still a fair amount of improvement to be found, and fans of the film will certainly wish to add a copy to their collections. Recommended.
