Aces Go Places 4K Blu-ray Movie Review

Reviewed by Dr. Stephen Larson October 15, 2026

Eric Tsang's Aces Go Places (original title: Jui gaai paak dong, 1982) is being released as part of Shout! Studios' ten-disc box set, Aces Go Places Collection.

One of the pleasures of watching a comedy/action hybrid and spoof film like Aces Go Places is to pick up on the panoply of American TV and film cultural references that it makes. The master thief King Kong (Samuel Hui) performs stunts on tightrope, motorcycle, and a motorized air glider in the same fashion that characters from a James Bond film would. Kong's counterpart and foe White Glove (Robert Houston) is a highly skilled thief himself patterned after the also sharply dressed Sir Charles Lytton (David Niven) from The Pink Panther (1964). (A photo of Inspector Clouseau is even shown in Aces Go Places.) White Glove's boss is an Italian godfather clearly modeled after Don Vito Corleone. (In his first appearance, he's holding a cat!) Albert “Baldy” Au (Karl Maka), the ham-fisted police investigator hired to first find King Kong and then White Glove, is referred to as Sergeant Kodojack in the movie's international version. This is a direct nod to the titular character in Kojak (1973–78). Aces Go Places also tips its cap to another popular detective series of the era. Baldy's formal entrance in the film along a concourse at a Hong Kong airport is intercut with a shot of a character holding a placard that reads: "Welcome, Mr. Columbo". This clearly invokes the affable LAPD lieutenant.

Even with all the intercultural references, Aces Go Places still manages to tell a relatively coherent tale. King Kong is a likeable thief who teems with Baldy and Superintendent Nancy Ho (Sylvia Chang) to locate precious diamonds that Kong initially filched from Italian and Hong Kong gangsters, who were at the bargaining table inside a high-rise. The jewels have gone missing and the clues to their whereabouts may be tattooed on the bodies of two girlfriends known to Gigolo Joe (Dean Shek), Kong's accomplice and sidekick. Aces Go Places excels when Sam Hui and his stuntmen stand-ins perform stunts that are breathtaking to watch in a pre-CGI world. Some of the sight gags and jokes are not as successful, though. (However, there's a joke that Baldy tells the police superintendent that earns a belly laugh.)

Shout!'s 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray and standard Blu-ray each derive from a 4K restoration from the original camera negative. The picture appears in its originally composed and exhibited ratio of 2.39:1. The UHD is presented in Dolby Vision (HDR10 compatible). The HDR adds quite a bit of depth without being overdone. Colors look outstanding with no instances of modernized tweaks. There's at least a fair amount of grain on the image along with some fine textures. The picture is largely clean, crisp, and very sharp. I did notice some light perforations in the image that are visible along the long-sleeved shirt of a man fleeing down a hallway in Screenshot #22. In addition, there's a thin tramline in an optical that features some masking meant to simulate a POV shot through a binoculars (see capture #21). I studied the UHD shot for shot on a 4K monitor and occasionally spotted source- or transfer-related infinitesimal dots that pop up from time to time.

The UHD carries a rough average video bitrate of 74.7 Mbps on the BD-66 and an overall bitrate of 80.9 Mbps. The feature on the Blu-ray only occupies about 26 GB of space on the BD-50 and delivers an average bitrate of 32000 kbps.

Screenshot #s 1-30, 32, 34, 36, 38, & 40 = Shout! Studios 2026 4K Ultra HD BD-66 (downscaled to 1080p)
Screenshot #s 31, 33, 35, 37, & 39 = Shout! Studios 2026 Blu-ray BD-50 (from a 4K restoration)

The 93-minute feature receives seven chapter breaks on each disc. There is not a scene-selection option on either so viewers will need to access chapters on the fly.

Shout! has supplied a Cantonese DTS-HD Master Audio Dual Mono mix (1587 kbps, 16-bit), which is the lone audio track on both discs for the longer domestic cut. The lossless track doesn't contain any dropouts, although the monaural source definitely shows its age. Dialogue is clean and pretty clear for the most part. The mono is authentically flat in most places but demonstrates some decent range when star and Cantopop singer performs the song, "Best Partners" on the film's non-diegetic track. There's also good range when electric bass and electric guitar from the score. The theme is at least somewhat analogous to Monty Norman's Bond theme but don't mistake it for a John Barry score! In addition, I appreciated other sound f/x like the expression "Wow!" when a close-up of the diamonds are shown. The mono does sound a bit scratchy when an excerpt from Swan Lake is played. I could also hear some background hiss but this could be completely source related from a vinyl record playing a movement of Swan Lake that may have accompanied the ballerinas on stage.

Shout!'s optional English subtitles are legible and mostly on screen long enough to read. Screenshot #s 23 (at the 23 min. 10 sec. mark), 24 (at the 25 min. 1 sec. mark), and 25 (at the 50 min. 45 sec.) flash and disappear pretty quick.

  • Playing an Ace: An Interview with Assistant Director O Sing-Pui (22:54, 1080p) - this is a great interview with O Sing-Pui, one of the two assistant directors on Aces Go Places. He reflects on his start at Cinema City, the general responsibilities of an assistant director, and the duties he assumed as an AD on Aces Go Places. He gives several specific examples, including how he organized the shooting schedule and the director's call sheet. He describes several stunts and explosive action scenes in the picture. He often speaks with enthusiasm about working on the film. In Cantonese or Mandarin, subtitled in English.
  • A Place Worth Revisiting: Frank Djeng on Aces Go Places (23:13, 1080p) - this interview with Djeng has the film historian looking back at the very first films made at Cinema City. • Mad Mission – Aces Go Places International Cut (1:22:56; upconverted to 1080p) - this is a truncated version of Aces Go Places that's known as Mad Mission outside of Asia. This appears to be an upscale from an SD source. The cut was released on DVD by Anchor Bay in the US and presented in SD on a Blu-ray by German label Crest Movies. Here it receives an MPEG-4 AVC encode and sports a mean video bitrate of 15000 kbps. It features a sound track dubbed in English. The encode is a DTS-HD MA 2.0 Mono (1574 kbps, 16-bit).
  • Theatrical Trailer (4:30, upconverted to 1080p) - Cinema City's official trailer for Aces Go Places presented in 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen. The trailer has not been restored. It retains lots of grain but also sports artifacts and tramlines. In Cantonese, subtitled in English.
  • International Trailer (3:45, upconverted to 1080p) - a trailer for the shorter version of Aces Go Places known as Mad Mission. It appears in 2.35:1 anamorphic and boasts a cleaner image than the domestic trailer, although it also hasn't been fully restored. The Cantonese dialogue has been dubbed into English.

Aces Go Places 4K Blu-ray Movie, Overall Score and Recommendation  4.0 of 5

Aces Go Places is an entertaining and enjoyable comedy/action romp that kicked off a hugely popular film franchise series in Hong Kong that, with this release, can finally be appreciated the world over. Shout!'s 4K transfer features an excellent color grade, though with some source flaws. The lossless mono track is in solid shape. The supplements are very informative across the board. It's an added bonus to have Mad Mission as well. A VERY SOLID RECOMMENDATION.
