Blu-ray Sales, November 5-11: Spider-Man Swings to Number One

For the week ending on November 11th, Sony Pictures' The Amazing Spider-Man topped the Blu-ray-only and overall package media charts. Director Marc Webb's reboot of the blockbuster Spider-Man franchise made a huge sales impression in just a few days; it streeted on Friday, November 9th as opposed to Tuesday the 6th, and still it managed to top all home media charts, including 3D Blu-rays (in fact, 17% of its total numbers came from 3D). These totals bode well for The Amazing Spider-Man's small-screen future, as does its impressive HD market share of 72%.

Second place on the overall and Blu-ray-only media rankings went to another Sony new release, albeit a more family-friendly one: Arthur Christmas. This holiday-themed CGI comedy had a somewhat disappointing theatrical run following its debut last year - it grossed only $46 million domestically, though its international performance of $100 million was much stronger. The amount of Arthur Christmas copies certainly reflects some of the viewer disinterest; while it came in second, it sold only 15% as many Blu-rays as The Amazing Spider-Man and 26% as many overall media units, and it had an HD market share of 42%.

Finally, sales titan The Avengers occupied the number three position on the Blu-ray-only chart. After seven weeks on home media, the superhero adventure showed no signs of disappearing - even on the overall media list, where Secret of the Wings came in third, The Avengers mustered a respectable sixth-place showing. The film moved 9% as many Blu-rays as The Amazing Spider-Man and had a 32% HD market share, while its total package media scores saw it selling 14% as many total units as that other Marvel actioner.
