The Cinema Guild announced today the acquisition of U.S. distribution rights to
Viola, Matías Piñeiro's dazzling riff on Shakespeare's
Twelfth Night that premiered in the Wavelengths Section of the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival.
Viola will receive a limited theatrical rollout next year followed by a home video release.
Known for his loquacious characters, swirling cinematography and arabesque plotlines, Matías Piñeiro, barely thirty years of age, has already emerged as the Jacques Rivette of Argentina. Set in Buenos Aires, his newest film
Viola follows a group of young actresses who are performing in a local production of Shakespeare's
Twelfth Night, while slowly unraveling an intricate web of romantic intrigue and revelation.
Matías Piñeiro was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina in 1982. He studied at the Universidad del Cine, where he also taught Filmmaking and Film History. In 2011 he received the Radcliffe Institute Fellowship from Harvard University for developing his new film project, "Sarmiento, translator." He currently lives in New York and teaches Creative Writing on a scholarship from NYU. His previous work includes
The Stolen Man (2007),
They All Lie (2009) and the first two films of his Shakespeare project,
Rosalinda (2010), a short film, and the feature
Viola (2012). He is currently developing the third installment,
The Princesa of France.
