Disney Buys Lucasfilm, Announces New Star Wars Film

The Walt Disney Company has acquired Lucasfilm for $4.05 billion in cash and stock. Disney's chairman, Rober Iger, made the announcement earlier today. The new owners have also announced plans to produce new Star Wars films. The first is expected to be released in 2015.
Kathleen Kennedy, the current co-chair of Lucasfilm, will serve as executive producer on the upcoming Star Wars film, while George Lucas will be involved as a creative consultant.
The acquisition of Lucasfilm comes after Disney bought Pixar Animation Studios in 2006 and Marvel Entertainment in 2010. Disney also distributes films from DreamWorks Pictures.
All previous Star Wars films have been released by Twentieth Century Fox. However, the studio will no longer be involved with future Star Wars business.
