Blu-ray Sales, October 15-21: Madagascar 3 Escapes to Number One

For the week ending on October 21st, DreamWorks' Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted topped the Blu-ray-only and overall package media charts. The threequel to the popular animated franchise had a strong box-office take following its release last June - it made over $376 million on top of its estimated $145 million budget - and its initial performance on home media also bodes well for DreamWorks; in addition to winning the top sales position, it managed a healthy Blu-ray market share of 56%.

Coming in at number two on both the overall package media charts and Blu-ray only rankings was last week's winner, Twentieth Century Fox's Alien prequel Prometheus. Sales of director Ridley Scott's horror-sci-fi blockbuster fell during its second week of home media release; it sold 33% as many Blu-rays as Madagascar 3 and only 27% as many total units. However, the film had the higher 3D market share - 23% to Madagascar 3's 13% - and its HD market share of 70% evinced only a minor drop from its record-breaking Blu-ray market share of 76% that it garnered on its small-screen debut.

Finally, number three is split between the separate HD and total package media figures. The 3D re-release of James Cameron's Avatar took third place on the Blu-ray chart; it moved 21% as many Blu-rays as Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted and had a 99% HD market share. However, when taking into consideration overall home media units, The Avengers occupied the third-highest sales position, selling 22% as many copies as Madagascar 3 and having a Blu-ray market share of 50%.
