The much anticipated Blu-ray release of The Avengers and the direct to home video debut of Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part 1 resulted in a new weekly Blu-ray revenue share record. For the week ending 09/30/12, Blu-ray's market share of total package media sales was an all time best 44%. The new mark bested the previous record of 40% established on the week ending 10/08/11, which featured the Blu-ray bow of The Lion King along with the home video release of Fast Five.
Marvel's The Avengers managed an impressive 72% of its total package media sales from the Blu-ray Disc format, a record high for a new theatrical to home video disc release (available for purchase in both formats). Meanwhile, DC Comics was well represented on the Blu-ray sales chart as Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part 1 captured 71% of its sales from the HD format. Marvel and DC together, propelled Blu-ray to its new revenue share vs DVD record.
Blu-ray revenue for the week registered a new 2012 high of $88.01 million, and the increase of Blu-ray sales receipts over the same week last year was 101.1%. The record is great, but when will Blu-ray reach that elusive 50% revenue share for the week? Circle sales week 12/4/12 - 12/9/12 in your calendar. The Dark Knight Rises and Finding Nemo make their respective Blu-ray debut on 12/4/2012 and a new weekly disc sales revenue share record of 50% or more could be established.
