For the week ending on September 23rd, Paramount Pictures' highly anticipated
Indiana Jones: The Complete Adventures box set dethroned last week's home media favorite,
Snow White and the Huntsman, to become the top-selling Blu-ray title.
Indiana Jones only holds this position on the Blu-ray-only charts - when one looks at overall package media selections,
Snow White still has the highest sales figures, whereas
Indiana Jones drops to fifth place - but this situation makes sense, considering that this home media release marks the Steven Spielberg action franchise's debut on the HD format after years of DVD and VHS availability. The title's Blu-ray market share bears out this fact: 100% of copies sold last week came from Blu-rays.
Coming in at number two on both the Blu-ray and overall package media charts is the horror-comedy mash-up
The Cabin in the Woods. Created by
Buffy the Vampire Slayer and
Angel alums Drew Goddard and Joss Whedon,
The Cabin in the Woods opened last spring to enthusiastic critical notices and somewhat middling box-office grosses; after costing an estimated $30 million, the film made only $42 million domestically. Still, this postmodern chiller always seemed destined for an appreciative cult following, and its healthy small-screen totals last week suggest that the feature might have a long second life on home media. Case in point: it sold 95% as many copies as
Indiana Jones on the Blu-ray-only rankings (and had a 54% HD market share) and 90% as many copies as
Snow White and the Huntsman on the overall home media list.
Finally, third place on the HD rankings went to
Snow White and the Huntsman. As mentioned previously, the dark fantasy came in at number one when taking into account all home media units, and to be fair, it did not lag behind
Indiana Jones by much on the Blu-ray-only chart; like
The Cabin in the Woods,
Snow White sold 95% as many discs as
Indiana Jones and had a 48% Blu-ray market share. On the overall package media chart, a movie far removed tonally from any of the aforementioned movies took the number three spot: the DTV Disney comedy
Beverly Hills Chihuahua 3.
