The Korean Film Council (KOFIC), a government-supported, self-administered body, which promotes and supports Korean Cinema, has chosen director Kim Ki-duk's latest film, Pieta (2012), to represent South Korea at the 85th Academy Awards.
Pieta was one of five candidates vying to represent South Korea at the Oscars. The other four films were Im Sang-soo's The Taste of Money, Hong Sang-soo's In Another Country, Yoon Jong-bin's Nameless Gangster: Rules of the Time, and Choo Chang-min's Masquerade.
Last week, Pieta won the prestigious Golden Lion Award for Best Film at the Venice Film Festival. The film tells the story of a ruthless loan shark whose life takes an unexpected turn when he meets a woman claiming to be his mother.
