Twentieth Century Fox and Apple have just revealed the first trailer for Life of Pi. For his newest film, Academy Award-winning director Ang Lee (Brokeback Mountain) has adapted Yann Martel's bestselling novel of the same name, a surreal, allegorical adventure story about Pi Patel (newcomer Suraj Sharma), a young man shipwrecked in the Pacific Ocean.
Stranded on a lifeboat, Pi must contend not just with the sea and its perils but also with the often dangerous company of his fellow survivors, including a hyena, an orangutan, a zebra, and a 450-pound Bengal tiger that simultaneously becomes Pi's greatest threat and his most trusted confidante.
The film, which features Irrfan Khan (A Mighty Heart) and Tobey Maguire (Spider-Man) in small roles, represents director Lee's first foray into 3D filmmaking; he shot Life of Pi using the Pace Fusion 3-D camera. Early this summer, Lee and Fox gave audiences a sample of the picture when they premiered extended clips before 3D screenings of Prometheus and Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter - the clips highlighted both the technical magic of the special effects as well as the contentious/respectful relationship between Pi and the tiger.
Life of Pi's scheduled U.S. release date is November 21st.
