Blu-ray Sales, July 2-8: Sherlock Holmes Again Tops Blu-ray Charts

The week ending on July 8th lacked many major new releases, a situation that allowed for some older titles to maintain their footing in the Blu-ray and overall media sales rankings. Looking at Blu-rays only, Warner Home Entertainment's Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows reclaimed the number one spot. The Robert Downey Jr.-starring sequel occupied this position during its first two weeks on home media but then found itself unseated by Wrath of the Titans and 21 Jump Street. However, this past week told a different story, as Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows rose back to the highest Blu-ray position, carrying with it an HD market share of 50%.

While Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows came out on top, it only did so by a narrow margin; another sequel, Warner's Wrath of the Titans, followed it at number two on the Blu-ray-only chart. Wrath of the Titans sold 99% as many Blu-rays as A Game of Shadows and enjoyed a 47% Blu-ray market share. The film also had the added benefit of 3D products to boost its overall sales totals - 11% of its total figures came from Wrath's Blu-ray 3D version (on the Blu-ray 3D chart, Wrath held the fifth highest sales spot).

The third position on the Blu-ray chart belonged to Sony Pictures Home Entertainment's 21 Jump Street. This comedic reimagining of the cult 1980's police procedural debuted at number two on the Blu-ray rankings and at number one on the overall package media list, and though its units sold have dropped somewhat, the film has still managed to compete closely with the aforementioned two titles. In particular, 21 Jump Street sold 84% as many Blu-rays as Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows and had a 32% market share on the HD format.

Interestingly enough, these standings are reversed when taking into consideration overall package media unit. On that chart, 21 Jump Street stayed at number one, followed by Wrath of the Titans at number two and Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows at number three.
