For the week ending on June 17th, Guy Richie's
Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows unseated the high-profile Disney release
John Carter from the top position on both the Blu-ray and overall media rankings. When it premiered in theaters last year, this big-budget sequel did not make quite the box-office impact that
its 2009 predecessor had; thanks - in part - to fierce competition from
Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, the Robert Downey Jr.-vehicle only managed a modest domestic gross of $187 million after accruing an estimated $125 million production budget. That said, its foreign grosses were strong (over $300 million overseas), as was its initial home media performance that included a 54% Blu-ray market share.
After making a robust small-screen debut two weeks ago, Twentieth Century Fox and Relativity Media's
Act of Valor managed to hold onto the number two slot on the overall media and Blu-ray-only charts. Sales did drop somewhat;
Act of Valor sold only 24% as many Blu-rays as
Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows and 23% as many total units. Still, the action-thriller's HD market share stayed high - between the two weeks, it dipped slightly from 59% to 56% - and its grasp on the second highest sales position continues to bolster the film's fortunes, which began with surprising theatrical success this winter, when it grossed more than $70 million domestically.
Finally, another new release - Sony Pictures'
Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance - made it to the number three position in Blu-ray and overall media sales. Like
Act of Valor, the weekly totals of the Nicolas Cage-starring comic book adaptation did not approach
Sherlock Holmes';
Ghost Rider sold 19% as many Blu-rays as
Sherlock Holmes and 22% as many overall home media units, and its Blu-ray market share was just 49%. Working in
Ghost Rider's favor, however, was the added 3D boost from the sales tallies.
The 3D edition premiered on the 3D Blu-ray list at number four.
