Independent distributors Janus Films are planning to bring back to U.S. theaters Vera Chytilová's
Sedmikrásky a.k.a
Daisies (1966), starring Ivana Karbanová, Jitka Cerhová and Marie Cesková. The film will open at BAMcinematek in Brooklyn on July 6 and The Cinefamily in Los Angeles on August 3. Nationwide dates will be announced later on.
Janus Films will present
Daisies in a new 35mm print.
Maybe the New Wave's most anarchic entry, Věra Chytilová's absurdist farce follows the misadventures of two brash young women. Believing the world to be "spoiled," they embark on a series of pranks in which nothing—food, clothes, men, war—is taken seriously.
Daisies is an aesthetically and politically adventurous film that's widely considered one of the great works of feminist cinema.
Note: Earlier this year, Criterion released
Pearls of the Czech New Wave 4DVD box set. One of the six films in it is
Daisies.
