For the week ending on June 3rd, HBO Home Entertainment scored the top seller on both the Blu-ray and overall home media charts with its release of
True Blood: The Complete Fourth Season. The success of
True Blood marks the second time this year where HBO has seen their popular television programming rise to the top of the home media charts; in March, the network's
Game of Thrones: The Complete First Season managed a similar feat. Whether or not
True Blood will maintain a strong standing in the weeks to come is yet to be seen, though these initial figures certainly do speak to the public's enduring support of the show.
At number two on both charts was
Man on a Ledge. The film's surprising home media debut comes after a disappointing theatrical run; the picture cost roughly $42 million but grossed just under $19 million domestically. However, a closer look at the weekly tallies reveals that sales for the Sam Worthington-starring action-thriller never risked approaching those for
True Blood. On the Blu-ray chart,
Man on a Ledge - which had an HD market share of 44% - sold 39% as many discs as HBO's vampire-themed soap opera, while on the overall media chart, that discrepancy is even larger: only 31% as many units as
True Blood.
Number three on both sales charts was Twentieth Century Fox's
Red Tails release. The George Lucas-produced feature premiered last week at number one; nevertheless, this relatively small drop bodes well for the WWII-set drama, which could find a more robust life on home media than it did during its modest theatrical exhibition. On both Blu-ray and overall unit lists, the film sold 26% as many copies as
True Blood, and it also had a solid Blu-ray market share of 35%.
