Blu-ray Sales, May 21-27: Red Tails Soars to the Top

For the week ending on May 27th, Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment scored the top two sellers on both Blu-ray and overall home media charts, with the week's biggest title the WWII adventure Red Tails. Despite some disappointing critical notices and a modest domestic gross of under $50 million, the George Lucas-produced feature made a solid home media debut that included robust Blu-ray figures; 48% of its total units purchased came from the HD market.

The other Fox title, and the second highest performer on the overall home media and Blu-ray rankings, was director McG's action-romantic-comedy This Means War. Like Red Tails, This Means War overcame underwhelming commercial and critical support - the film currently has a 31% favorability rating on Metacritic and grossed only $54.6 million domestically on top of its estimated $65 million budget - to open strong during its first week in home theaters. This Means War sold 72% as many total copies as Red Tails did and 65% as many Blu-ray copies; furthermore, it netted 44% of its total market share from the Blu-ray front.

Coming in at number three on both sales charts was Disney's release of The Secret World of Arrietty. Earlier this year, the Studio Ghibli animated picture - which made over $145 million worldwide - made its North American premiere to reasonably positive reviews (80% favorability on Metacritic), and its initial home media performance continued the upward trend. Arrietty moved 43% as many units on the overall media list as Red Tails and 39% as many on the Blu-ray-only list. In addition, the Studio Ghibli fantasy had a Blu-ray market share of 43%.
