Blu-ray Sales, April 2-8: War Horse Rides High on Blu-ray

For the week ending on April 8th, Steven Spielberg's WWI epic War Horse has the top spot for total Blu-rays sold. This Blu-ray debut is a strong one for the film - 36% of its overall sales came from Blu-ray - which enjoyed both a worldwide box-office gross of over $166 million this past winter as well as six Oscar nominations at the 84th Annual Academy Awards.

With War Horse's showing last week, director Steven Spielberg now has two films on the top-selling home media lists; his Adventures of Tintin currently sits at position seven in overall package media and at position six in individual Blu-rays.

Just below War Horse on the Blu-ray rankings layout is Hop. The family-friendly affair sold 98% as many Blu-rays as War Horse and, in fact, bests the war drama on the overall package media chart, holding the number one slot. In the three weeks since its home media premiere, Hop has continued to perform strongly for its parent company, Universal Studios, and the Easter holiday this past Sunday no doubt helped bolster Hop's sales even further. 30% of its purchased products came from the HD market.

The discrepancy between HD and overall media lists also affects the third highest seller. Taking into consideration just the Blu-ray chart, Disney's The Muppets occupies the third slot. Like Hop, The Muppets has demonstrated consistent sales figures in the three weeks since its street date; 37% of its numbers came from Blu-ray, and within that format it moved 61% as many copies as War Horse. However, the overall package media chart tells a slightly different story. There, The Muppets ranks at the fifth highest position, selling 50% as many units as overall media leader Hop and falling just behind Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked and We Bought a Zoo (in that order).
