Blu-ray Sales, Feb. 20-26: Puss Climbs to The Top

For the week ending 02/26/2012, Dreamworks' Shrek-spinoff and recent Best Animated Feature nominee Puss in Boots climbed to the top slot on both the Blu-ray and the overall package media sales charts. While the film enjoyed a modest box-office success - budgeted at $130 million, Puss made just over $149 million domestically - these sales figures indicate a promising future on home media. Puss in Boots had a strong Blu-ray debut, especially considering the fact that it streeted on 02/24 and not on 02/21, and it made over 40% of its total package unit sales through the HD format.

Released just three days before Puss in Boots, the Blu-ray of director Brett Ratner's Tower Heist also had a solid sales week. Interest in the all-star crime-comedy brought it to No. 2, selling 45% as many Blu-rays as Dreamworks' animated adventure. Of its aggregate home media figures, consumers bought 39% of Tower Heist copies on Blu-ray instead of DVD or digital copies.

Coming in third is Disney's Lady and the Tramp high-definition reissue, which has garnered over three weeks of healthy numbers. Interestingly enough, when one factors in both Blu-ray and DVD sales, both The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1 and J. Edgar (in that order) have out-grossed Lady and the Tramp; however, in terms of just Blu-ray statistics, the Disney classic handily outranked those other two films, netting 36% as many Blu-rays as Puss in Boots as opposed to Twilight with 27% and J. Edgar with 22%.
