Official Teaser for Prometheus (Updated)

Twentieth Century Fox has just released the first teaser trailer for Prometheus. Director Ridley Scott's highly anticipated return to the science-fiction genre - his third such movie after Alien and Blade Runner - this thriller stars Noomi Rapace (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) as Elizabeth Shaw, a scientist who accepts the offer from an enigmatic businesswoman (Charlize Theron, Monster) to embark on a historic space expedition. The mission's objective: to make contact with the advanced lifeforms that helped create our planet.

However, first contact does not go as planned, and the trip quickly becomes a nightmare for all involved, forcing Shaw and the other survivors to fight not just for their own survival, but for the survival of Earth itself.

Written by Damon Lindelof (Lost) and Jon Spaihts (The Darkest Hour), Prometheus features an impressive supporting cast that includes Michael Fassbender (X-Men: First Class), Idris Elba (Thor), Patrick Wilson (Watchmen), Logan Marshall-Green (Brooklyn's Finest), Rafe Spall (Anonymous), Sean Harris (The Red Riding Trilogy), and Guy Pearce (Memento).

While Scott has resisted calling Prometheus a direct prequel to Alien, he has admitted that the new picture contains "strands of [the earlier film's] DNA." This teaser certainly suggests more than a passing connection between the two; their respective teaser trailers share the same unsettling background tone as well as a unique, slow-developing main title reveal.

Update: Both the domestic and international theatrical trailers provide new information about the film's plot; in particular, viewers now have a better sense of the first-act complications that motivate the central space expedition. The domestic trailer plays up the film's horror aspects, while the international trailer takes a more slow-burn approach to teasing the story.

Prometheus' scheduled U.K. release date is June 1st, and its U.S. release date is June 8th.
