Cowboys & Aliens was to be a massive summer blockbuster, with enough star power and fancy CG graphics to make George Lucas jealous. Unfortunately, audience asked a collective "huh?" and even having broken the century mark in ticket sales, failed to make back the estimated $163M production budget. Still, it's this week's most popular pick, and with an outstanding video transfer and ground-thumping audio track, it will surely make for a fun ride.
Staff reviewer Kenneth Brown commented in his
Cowboys & Aliens Blu-ray review , "Despite all the talent involved, Cowboys & Aliens is a mediocre misfire. It isn't a complete waste, but it isn't a complete success either. The same can't be said of Universal's Blu-ray release, though. I doubt even Meyers could find a problem with it."
When
The Hangover was released, it was a refreshing take on the "male" comedy that stood out with a bizarre storyline and a down-right hilarious plot. The Hangover Part II turned out to be the exact same movie, which – as director Todd Philips points out – works great for horror films, but not so much for comedies that were successful for being so unique in the first place.
