The Lion King, roared its way to the top of the Blu-ray sales chart. In the heels of a very sucessful 3D re-release in theaters, grossing upwards of $87 million in domestic box office revenue, Simba and friends had an impressive debut in the HD home video market. The Lion King, finished the week as the No. 2 overall unit seller and moved 79% as many units as the week's No. 1 overall title.
Bowing in No. 2 on the Blu-ray sales chart and No. 1 on the overall sales chart was
Fast Five.
The Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Paul Walker starrer marks the fifth and most profitable installement of the popular racing series. The Universal Studios blockbuster ended its worldwide theatrical run with an amazing total of $620 million.
Fast Five proved to be a hit with Blu-ray buyers and managed 57% of its total unit sales from the HD format.
Transformers: Dark of the Moon finished its full week in stores as the No. 3 seller in both the Blu-ray and the overall sales charts. Optimus Prime and the rest of the Autobots received 57% of their home video sales from Blu-ray discs.
Very strong sales of Blu-ray movies for this week could possibly shatter the 35% share of total package media revenue, which Blu-ray achieved for the week ending 9/17/11. Movie sales are typically stronger during the final three months of the year and 2011 follows that trend. As the popularity of Blu-ray movies continues to increase, more sales records will be set in the next few months.
