In-Stat - "Blu-ray Players to Reach 105M by 2015"

In-Stat has released a new report which details the rise of Blu-ray across the globe until the year 2015. They predict that Blu-ray will reach 105m units shipped per year by 2015 and that Blu-ray will become the dominant physical format that year in both players and recorders.

They have also said that in 2010 North America accounted for 38% of worldwide Blu-ray player shipments and that Blu-ray recorders are most popular Japan. In-Stat said that one major region where Blu-ray is struggling to make headway against DVD is in Europe and that in China CBHD is doing better.

Looking at future purchasing patterns, In-Stat say that DVD recorders, which are very popular in Japan and Europe, are going diminish in popularity and shipment terms until 2015 when shipments will become almost non-existent and only a few units will be shipped to Japan on a legacy basis. They say that Blu-ray recorders will take their place, and that the market may even evolve before Blu-ray gains a foothold in the market. DLNA and hard- disk based set top boxes are proving to be very popular and may supplant Blu-ray and DVD as the home format of choice for recording digital video content.
