Universal Studios has released the official trailer for their upcoming
Contraband. The action-thriller stars Mark Wahlberg (
The Fighter) as a former smuggler who must return to the criminal life in order to save his family.
Directed by Baltasar Kormákur (
Inhale), this remake of the Icelandic film
Reykjavik-Rotterdam co-stars Kate Beckinsale (
Underworld) as Wahlberg's long-suffering wife and features a supporting cast that includes Ben Foster (
3:10 to Yuma), Diego Luna (
Open Range), Giovanni Ribisi (
Lost in Translation), J.K. Simmons (
Burn After Reading), Lukas Haas (
Inception), and Caleb Landry Jones (
X-Men: First Class).
The trailer suggests that the R-rated
Contraband may mark a return to form, of sorts, for Wahlberg, placing him in the kind of violent crime thriller that initially helped to define his career; films like
Four Brothers or James Gray's
The Yards cast Wahlberg as a tough-guy reluctant to violence but all-too capable of exerting it, and
Contraband looks to fit that mold.
Universal has set
Contraband's wide release date for January 13th, 2012.
