Blu-ray Sales, September 5-11: X-Men are First in Their Class

For the week ending 09/11/11, X-Men: First Class, powered its way to the top of the Blu-ray sales chart. Signaling the first high profile issue from the slate of Summer 2011 blockbusters, the mutants unleashed their fury and infused energy into the home video market. X-Men: First Class is distributed by 20th Century Fox and finished its worldwide run with a total of $353 million. The mutants were an overwhelming success in their first week of Blu-ray release as they achieved 60% of their total package unit sales from the HD format.

Having an outstanding Blu-ray bow was Al Pacino's Scarface. Offered in an attractive limited edition SteelBook, Scarface became an instant hit among Blu-ray collectors of all ages. The movie finished the week as the No. 6 seller in the overall sales chart based exclusively on the strength of its Blu-ray sales.

Hanna was another new home video title that had a successful debut for Blu-ray as it finished the week No. 3 on the Blu-ray sales chart and No. 2 on the overall sales chart. The film from Universal Studios managed a very strong 44% of its total disc sales from Blu-ray.

Exciting times are ahead as we preview next week's sales results, for titles opening this week. A monumental sales battle between Star Wars, perhaps the most anticipated catalog title in the history of the Blu-ray format, and the summer smash Thor. Blu-ray sales records are sure to be set in the next few weeks.
