Transformers: Dark of the Moon Blu-ray (Updated w/Battle Zone App)

Paramount Home Entertainment will release Transformers: Dark of the Moon on Blu-ray this month. The third installment in director Michael Bay's successful action series follows Sam Witwicky (Shia LaBeouf, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull) as he and the Autobots make a desperate last stand against the evil Decepticons. Returning cast members from Transformers and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen are Tyrese Gibson (Four Brothers), Josh Duhamel (Life as We Know It), and John Turturro (Miller's Crossing), and they are joined by franchise newcomers John Malkovich (Rounders), Frances McDormand (Fargo), Ken Jeong (Role Models), and Alan Tudyk (Firefly: The Complete Series).

Paramount's Blu-ray/DVD/Digital Copy combo pack presents the film in its original aspect ratio of 2.39:1, mastered in 1080p with 7.1 Dolby TrueHD sound and discrete 5.1 and 2.0 Dolby Digital audio tracks.

In terms of special features, the package is a bare-bones affair. However, Paramount's Transformers: Dark of the Moon press release announced that a deluxe Blu-ray 3D/Blu-ray/DVD/Digital Copy edition is in development and will arrive sometime in the months following this initial home video release; Paramount promises "loads of bonus features" for the deluxe edition.

As many online sources have pointed out - including our own Blu-ray.com reviewer Martin Liebman - next week's Transformers: Dark of the Moon Blu-ray includes a $10 promotional coupon for use with a purchase of the deluxe Blu-ray 3D/Blu-ray/DVD/Digital Copy edition. While the coupon does not identity the deluxe edition's street date, it is valid until June 30th, 2012.

Update: Furthermore, also launching on Transformers: Dark of the Moon's street date is TF3 Battle Zone, a social networking app inspired by the events of the film. As Paramount's official press release states:

"Paramount Home Entertainment is taking the epic battle between the legendary Autobots and Decepticons to the streets with an all-new social networking app arriving in conjunction with the Blu-ray and DVD debut of the $1 billion global hit Transformers: Dark of the Moon on September 30, 2011. TF3 Battle Zone adds another layer of interaction to existing social networks by leveraging the Foursquare API. Users can choose their side and defend their city by claiming and defending real-world territory every time they check into a location. The mobile apps for Apple iOS, Android, or HTML5-compatible devices turn any location into a battle zone and bring the fight to the world's largest social network on the official Transformers Facebook page."

Transformers: Dark of the Moon and TF3 Battle Zone will street on September 30th.
