Blu-ray Sales, August 29-September 4: Rio Hangs on

For the week ending 09/04/11, Rio, managed to hold on to the No. 1 spot on the Blu-ray sales chart. The last week before blockbuster Summer 2011 titles start releasing in home video paved the way for the animated film from 20th Century Home Entertainment to claim its fourth weekly Blu-ray sales title. In their fifth week of release, Blu and Linda pecked 33% of their total home video sales from Blu-ray discs.

Having a big debut on the Blu-ray sales charts, Sons of Anarchy: Season Three, made its case for more TV series to be released in Blu-ray. Sons of Anarchy managed to sell 79% as many units as the week's No. 1 BD title. Another TV season, The Vampire Diaries: The Complete Second Season, finished its initial week of release biting on the No. 5 Blu-ray sales spot.

Bowing on the No. 3 spot on the Blu-ray sales chart and the No. 1 spot on the overall sales chart was Madea's Big Happy Family. Tyler Perry is a very popular brand, but his star power has yet to translate into strong sales in the Blu-ray format. Madea only moved 9% of its total package media sales via HD discs.

Looking foward to next week's sales results, for titles released this week, X-Men: First Class is assured to have a huge debut on blu-ray. But can Blu-ray sales of the newest version of X-Men surpass DVD's share? On the catalog slate, Scarface, makes a highly anticipated release for the format. Al Pacino's version of Scarface will be a big seller for Blu-ray as the release includes: SteelBook packaging, a 1932 version of the movie (on DVD), digital copy, and a very attractive price in Amazon/Best Buy.
