Last June Disney held a 20th Anniversary screening for one of their most revered 1990's catalog titles, The Rocketeer. The event, which took place at the El Capitan theater in Hollywood was hosted by Kevin Smith and featured a screening of a brand new print of the film as well as actual props and collectible merchandise on display. Perhaps the only thing missing from the night was a Blu-ray announcement for the film, but fans will be happy to know that The Rocketeer will finally be available in high-def before the end of the year.

Disney has confirmed Amazon's pre-order listing of the 20th Anniversary Edition Blu-ray of the film with a release date of December 13th and a $26.50 SRP.

Update: According to Disney's official announcement, the Blu-ray will present The Rocketeer in a 2.35:1 aspect ratio with 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio. Special features are still unknown.

Joe Johnston's (Captain America: The First Avenger) The Rocketeer hit theaters back in 1991 to mostly positive reviews but failed to attract a large audience at the time. The film stars Billy Campbell as a stunt pilot and mechanic in 1930's California who comes across stolen jet-pack designed by Howard Hughes. Based on the retro comic book by Dave Stevens, the superhero adventure also stars Jennifer Connelly, Timothy Dalton and Alan Arkin.

As Disney has been slow to release their live-action catalog titles to Blu-ray, this should come as a wonderful holiday treat to fans of the film.
