For the week ending August 7,
Rio flew to the top of the Blu-ray sales chart. The blue parrot was a box office sensation, produced with a $90 million budget, the film finished its worldwide theatrical run with an impressive total of $479 million. Overall sales of package media for the year are down 16% from 2010; although, Blu-ray sales are up 10%. However,
Rio is only the fourth title placing in the Top Twenty 2011 Domestic Grosses to receive a home video release.
Rio ended its initial week with 33% of its sales coming from Blu-ray discs.
Bowing is at No.2 on both the Blu-ray and the overall sales charts was
Soul Surfer, which is based on the true story of a teenage surfer girl who overcomes the loss of an arm in a shark attack and goes back into the ocean.
Soul Surfer received 21% of all package media sales from Blu-ray, but only managed to sell 11% as many copies as
Rio.
Placing No.3 for the week,
Rango, continued its successful run in the home video market by managing a strong 31% share of unit sales for Blu-ray. Dropping three spots to No.4 was previous week Blu-ray sales champ
Source Code. In its second week of release, the Jake Gyllenhaal thriller earned 20% of its total unit sales from the HD format.
