This summer's hottest Asian film is apparently too hot for the UK. The BBFC (British Board of Film Classification) have requested cuts on the world's first 3D erotic film, 3D Sex and Zen: Extreme Ecstasy, which is distributed in the UK by Metrodome Video.
Metrodome Video were required to make two minutes of cuts to scenes of non consensual and violent sex but the strong sex scenes have been passed uncut at '18'".
The film has been well received by the UK press so far, with The Guardian Online suggesting that it could be the saviour of 3D cinema, which has been underperforming in 2011.
3D Sex and Zen: Extreme Ecstasy has shattered box office records across the Asia Pacific region, including Hong Kong and Singapore. It has also grossed over $1m on 6 screens in Australia. The film is due to open in the UK on 2nd September in an exclusive deal with Odeon Cinemas.
3D Sex and Zen: Extreme Ecstasy was released uncut in Hong Kong and in Australia, but is currently banned in Mainland China. In the US, the film has earnt an NC17 rating from the MPAA, which means that nobody under the age of 18 will be permitted to see it.
An adaptation of the classic novel The Carnal Prayer Mat, the film follows a young Ming Dynasty scholar named Wei Yangsheng on an eye-opening journey of sexual discovery.
Directed by Christopher Suen and produced by Stephen Shiu, the executive producer of its predecessor film Sex and Zen, 3D Sex and Zen: Extreme Ecstasy is "the world's first 3-D erotic film"
