The long-discussed digital streaming service, UltraViolet has finally arrived on the foreseeable horizon. According to Home Media Magazine, Warner Bros. will introduce UltraViolet functionality later this year with the Blu-ray releases of Green Lantern and Horrible Bosses.
The cloud-based service is being cooperatively developed by various Hollywood studios and tech companies that form the Digital Entertainment Content Ecosystem (DECE), including Warner Bros. and Sony Pictures Entertainment. It will provide consumers a digital copy of their purchases which can be streamed or downloaded on various devices, and hopes to address the issue of limited compatibility that is associated with collecting and building a personal library of digital content.
Speaking earlier today, Time Warner CEO Jeff Bewkes stated, "We believe this could fundamentally change how people manage and watch their movie collection... And it could significantly improve the value proposition of digital ownership". Bewkes went on to confirm that the majority of future home entertainment releases will include UltraViolet functionality.
As of July, the DECE is comprised of over 70 corporations who are backing UltraViolet, including Fox, Lionsgate, NBC Universal, Paramount, Microsoft and Hewlett Packard. Notable exceptions are Apple and Disney, who respectively operate their iTunes and Keychest services.
Update: Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has also entered the world of UltraViolet service. The studio's two inaugural Blu-rays boasting this feature will be The Smurfs and Friends with Benefits.
