Lionsgate will bring the controversial thriller Red State to Blu-ray on October 18th. The indie horror film, which was written and directed by Kevin Smith, has had quite an unconventional release thus far. Smith believed the film would struggle in the traditional theatrical process and opted to tour with the film and hold Q & As after each screening. A distribution deal with Lionsgate was then reached in June to give the film VOD and packaged media releases.
Red State will be released on VOD September 1st followed by a Blu-ray release over a month later on October 18th. Kevin Smith's personal promotion of the film will also continue this fall, including a one week run at Quentin Tarantino's New Beverly Cinema starting August 19th.
The film itself centers on three young men who come across an ad posted by an older women offering a sex invitation. After pursuing it, they encounter sinister religious fundamentalists who are seeking to teach the boys a lesson. The film stars Michael Parks, Michael Angarano, Melissa Leo, Stephen Root and John Goodman.
Technical specifications for the release have yet to be revealed. Special features will include:
Audio Commentary with writer/director Kevin Smith
Making-of featurette
Sundance speech with introduction by Kevin Smith
Sundance ending
Deleted scenes with introduction by Kevin Smith
Poster gallery with introduction by Kevin Smith
A SRP of $29.98 has been set for Red State. Pre-orders on Amazon have yet to go up. Stay tuned for more info after an official announcement from Lionsgate is released.
