Roberto Benigni's 1997 masterpiece Life is Beautiful will debut on Blu-ray thanks to Lionsgate. The film, which Benigni wrote, directed and starred in, tells the story of Guido and his family, Dora and Giosuč. The first half of the film is a whimiscal comedy in which Guido works in his Uncle's restaurant and courts Dora (Nicoletta Braschi). The second half takes a darker turn as Guido and his son are taken to a Nazi concentration camp. While there, Guido does his best to convince young Giosuč that what they experience there is only a game.
The film garnered seven Academy Award noms, and won Best Foreign Picture, Best Original Score, and Best Actor for Benigni (who gave a very enthusiastic acceptance speech).
The Blu-ray for Life is Beautiful will contain the Making Life is Beautiful featurette and the original theatrical trailer. Cover art and technical specifications should be revealed shortly.
Life is Beautiful will hit stores on October 4th with a SRP of $14.99.
