Harry Potter Magics Way to the Top

For the week ending 04/17/11 Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows has worked its magic on the charts and flown into number one. The Blu-ray, which released on 04/15/11, outsold its nearest rival at a 6 to 1 ratio and almost had parity sales with the DVD version. Six other Potter movies entered the top twenty on strong Blu-ray sales with the Harry Potter 1-5 BDs outselling their DVD counterparts at two to one or above and the sixth movie Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince BD selling equally as well as the DVD at a one to one ratio. This could represent a shift in catalogue buying with Blu-ray now driving catalogue sales of older franchise entries as people upgrade their collections and it is an avenue of income studios will be more than happy to explore.

Next on the chart was The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader which rose two places in the all formats chart and rose one place to number two in the Blu-ray chart as it recorded its first full week on sale. Next up was Tron: Legacy which is down three places in the all formats chart, but only down two places on the BD charts as the Blu-ray sales remain strong as it outsold the DVD again this week.

Family Titles See Small Turnaround

In fourth place was Pixar's The Incredibles, a new entry which saw strong sales for a catalogue title and entered the all formats chart at number seven with 98% of all sales on BD. Rounding out the top five was last week's number two, Tangled, down three places on the BD chart and one place on the all formats chart. Another catalogue re-release, Pixar's Cars, was a new entry at number six on the BD chart and came in at number nine on the all formats top twenty. With three Disney animated movies in the BD and all formats top ten charts family BDs could be seeing a small turnaround and their relative strength will be noted by big players in the family entertainment industry.

According to Nielsen VideoScan First Alert BD accounted for 44% of sales for the top twenty titles.
