Study Reports Staying Power of Discs

According to Home Theater Magazine, it's not yet any time soon to retire your Blu-ray player or stop buying and renting discs. A new study commissioned by Redbox, the disc rental kiosk company, concludes that discs will dominate as the top home media format for another decade. And with just only 11% of HDTVs purchased in the last three years internet-connected, the Consumer Electronics Association anticipates a continued need for physical media.

Meanwhile, brick- and-mortar stores, kiosks and subscription services need not shut their doors: physical rentals are projected to have triple the market share as digital rentals in 2014. Comparing the quality of digital downloads to physical media, the study says "As Blu-ray high-definition home video becomes the norm, digital could require some consumers to downgrade their viewing experiences or opt out of new features".
