Samsung 3D Starter Kit Now with Megamind 3D Blu-ray (Update)

Samsung is discontinuing its existing 3D Starter Kit (model number SSG-P2100S/ZA), which contained two pairs of 3D glasses and Shrek: The Complete Collection 3D. A new 3D Starter Kit has been launched (model SSG-P3100M), which includes two pairs of glasses, the Shrek movies and also a mail-in voucher to receive the exclusive 3D Blu-ray of Megamind. This new starter kit carries a list price of $499.99.

According to information relayed by Samsung to retailers, the new 3D glasses are incompatible with the 2010 lineup of 3DTVs from the company, as they use Bluetooth technology to communicate with the TV instead of infrared.

Update: Samsung has informed that the IR glasses for 2010 TVs will not be discontinued immediately as the CE company will continue to sell IR-based glasses for at least another year - and beyond that if there continues to be demand for them. They will be available at Samsung.com and in any stores that carry the glasses.

There is still no date for a wide release of the previous 3D titles from Dreamworks Animation available exclusively with Samsung hardware, such as Monsters vs. Aliens 3D or How to Train Your Dragon 3D.
