Typically, the week before Christmas lacks big name releases due to studios admission that the majority of holiday shopping has already taken place, and there is no room for last minute purchases like a new Blu-ray release. In fact, the week after Christmas is typically when releases start picking up again, with studios hoping to cash in on the inevitable gift card purchases following the festivities. It is because of this that Sony's decision to push the Blu-ray release of '
District 9' up a week is curious, but we are very thankful we can pick up this title today (or at least find it under the tree on Friday).
For the
Blu-ray review of 'District 9', staff reviewer Martin Liebman commented, " Few films grab the attention so vigorously and never let go quite like District 9, and through its many layers the film gels wonderfully from beginning to end, every angle falling into place for one of the summer's most exceptional films and one of the decade's most unique Science Fiction experiences." He continues, "Sony's Blu-ray release of this impressive film is up to the task. Boasting startlingly clear visuals, a faultless lossless soundtrack, and plenty of bonus materials, District 9 is yet another feather in Sony's cap, a perfect example of why the studio may very well be Blu-ray's best and most consistent."
Today also marks the first release of Family Guy material on Blu-ray with '
Family Guy Presents: Something Something Something Dark Side'. This is actually the second time that Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane has spoofed the Star Wars universe (the first episode, 'Blue Harvest', was not released on Blu-ray), with a third expected sometime next year.
Sony is releasing the electric guitar documentary '
It Might Get Loud' today as well, which features legendary guitarists Jimmy Page, Edge, and Jack White. Staff reviewer Martin Liebman commented, in the
Blu-ray review of 'It Might Get Loud', "A solid Documentary in every regard, all audiences will find something to treasure in It Might Get Loud. As expected, Sony's Blu-ray release is a first-class effort. Boasting a strong 1080p picture quality within the confines if the film's intended look, a soul-stirring lossless soundtrack, and a couple of worthwhile extras, It Might Get Loud deserves a home in every serious Blu-ray collection."
Fox is today releasing the romantic comedy '
(500) Days of Summer', while Disney is releasing Mike Judge's latest film '
Extract'. Oh, and if you have to buy a Christmas gift for someone you really don't like, may I suggest '
All About Steve'. Nothing says "I Hate You" more than a film that only managed 6% on
Rotten Tomatoes.
