Australian label Imprint Films has informed us that it will add to its catalog Directed By... Steven Soderbergh (1991-1995), a four-disc 4K Blu-ray/Blu-ray set. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on November 25.

Description: The work of Steven Soderbergh transgresses genre and has been a lynchpin in defining modern cinema. Known for mastering both the intimate drama and the blockbuster epic, Soderbergh's inventive, bold style of storytelling saw him win the Palme d'Or for his 1989 directorial debut Sex, Lies, and Videotape, win a Best Director Oscar for Traffic (2000), and sees him continue to push boundaries and break molds today.

This 4K Blu-ray + Blu-ray hardbox brings together key directorial efforts from one of the greatest contemporary filmmakers of recent decades:
  • Kafka (1991 Original Theatrical Cut) / Mr. Kneff (2021 Director's Re-Cut) - worldwide 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray debuts!
  • King of the Hill (1993) - Blu-ray
  • The Underneath (1995) - Blu-ray
Limited Edition 4-Disc Hardbox + 60-Page Hardcover Booklet including brand NEW essays by Brian Tallerico and Francesco Massaccesi. 1500 copies only.

KAFKA

Soderbergh followed his acclaimed directorial debut, Sex, Lies, and Videotape (1989), with the surrealist mystery thriller biopic Kafka (1991). This subversive take on the life of author Franz Kafka blends reality and Kafka's own fictional works together into a unique, bizarre world.

After a colleague is murdered, insurance worker Kafka becomes embroiled in an underground group attempting to thwart a secret organization that controls the major events in society. Starring Jeremy Irons as Kafka, and featuring performances from Theresa Russell, Joel Grey, Ian Holm, and Alec Guinness, the once box-office flop has since mutated into a cult classic.

In 2021, Soderbergh premiered his long-planned re-cut and re-imagined version of the film, titled Mr. Kneff, transforming the picture into a silent, sepia-tinted, shortened vision, accompanied by an energetic contemporary score. Appearing here on disc for the first time worldwide, Mr. Kneff is proof of Soderbergh's enthusiasm for embracing the unexpected and revisiting doors previously closed.

Take a journey into Kafka's absurd, dystopian, psychological labyrinth - a must-see gem for fans of Brazil (1985), 1984 (1984), and They Live (1988). Both versions come to 4K Blu-ray for the first time worldwide in astonishing new 4K restorations, and also make their global Blu-ray debuts!

KING OF THE HILL

Nominated for the Palme d'Or and named one of the top ten films of 1993 by Time Magazine and Entertainment Weekly, King of the Hill is a moving coming-of-age drama, adapted from a memoir by playwright A.E. Hotchner.

In the 1930s Depression-era Midwest, a young boy is forced to navigate life alone after his mother is committed to a sanatorium with tuberculosis. Surviving on his own in a St. Louis hotel, he waits for his traveling salesman father, whose return is uncertain.

A young Jesse Bradford (Romeo + Juliet, Bring It On) stars, receiving a Young Artist Award nomination for his performance in the film, alongside performances from Jeroen Krabbé (The Fugitive), Lisa Eichhorn (Cutter's Way), Karen Allen (Raiders of the Lost Ark), Spalding Gray (The Killing Fields), Elizabeth McGovern (Downton Abbey), and Adrien Brody (The Pianist).

THE UNDERNEATH

A remake of Criss Cross (1949), and based on the novel by Don Tracy, Soderbergh's crime noir The Underneath stars Peter Gallagher (The Player), Alison Elliott (Birth), and William Fichtner (Crash).

A recovering gambling addict attempts to reconcile with his family and friends but finds trouble and temptation when caught between feelings for his ex-wife and her dangerous hoodlum boyfriend. Also featuring performances from Shelley Duvall and Elisabeth Shue, The Underneath features a screenplay written by Soderbergh himself, under the pseudonym Sam Lowry.
