British distributors 88 Films have detailed their upcoming Blu-ray release of Richard Benjamin's Mermaids (1990), starring Cher, Bob Hoskins, Winona Ryder, Michael Schoeffling, and Christina Ricci. The release is scheduled to arrive on the market on October 19.
Description: It's 1963, and America is in mourning following the death of President Kennedy. But Charlotte Flax – Winona Ryder, fresh from Heathers – has troubles of her own. It's not just that this straight-laced teenager has started clashing with her more free-spirited mother (Cher; Mask, Moonstruck): other things are changing too – boys are more interesting, and life seems a little more complicated.
With a sensational soundtrack filled with glorious pre-Beatles pop (not to mention Cher's version of The Shoop Shoop Song, which lodged at Number One for five weeks), Mermaids is a warm and incisive coming of age story.
