Warner Archive has announced its August batch of releases. They are: Sergeant Rutledge (1960), Montana (1950), All Through the Night (1942), Pennies from Heaven (1981), Torrid Zone (1940), Forever: The Complete Series (2014-2015), Wag the Dog (1997), The Human Comedy (1943), The Bad Seed (1956), The Wings of Eagles (1957), Broadway Melody of 1938 (1937), and Auntie Mame (1958).

Sergeant Rutledge

In 1866, new fighting units are formed within the U.S. Cavalry, the courageous 9th and 10th regiments. Plains Indians call them Buffalo Soldiers because of the bison coats they wear in winter. History, judging from the regiments' list of Medal of Honor winners, calls them heroes. Against this backdrop, legendary director John Ford crafts the story of Sergeant Rutledge (Woody Strode), a 9th Cavalry officer on trial for rape and murder. Lt. Cantrell (Jeffrey Hunter) defends Rutledge as witnesses give testimony (relived in flashbacks) revealing the Sergeant's gallantry – and the shocking truth behind the alleged crimes. Ford, who attacked racism in The Searchers, explores similar territory in this landmark Western, the power of which still rings out with uncommon force decades later.

Montana

The star who brought frontier justice to Dodge City and San Antonio heads for the wide-open spaces of Montana in this adventure saga about a bitter range wat. Errol Flynn stars as Morgan Lane, a transplanted Australian sheepman who rides into cattle country looking to buy grazing land—and finds himself up against ranchers who would rather draw guns than welcome a woolly interloper, especially one they consider the most contemptible excuse for a human being to ever cross the Great Plains: A sheep rancher. Flynn's San Antonio co-star Alexis Smith is a flame-haired beauty with an eye for the newcomer…. until she discovers his occupation. But Morgan has a way of winning over enemies, and when the range war turns hot, Montana becomes the battleground for action, romance, and frontier justice, all in glorious Technicolor!®

All Through the Night

The ruckus in Europe? Churchill and Roosevelt can have it. "Gloves" Donahue is too busy laying his peepers on the Saratoga morning line or noodling out another way to rub up against considerable dough. But when someone bumps off the little old man who bakes Gloves' favorite cheesecake – well this means war! Following his triumphs in High Sierra and The Maltese Falcon, Humphrey Bogart had a great deal of fun taking on the change-of-pace role of Gloves, and the hijinks are winningly contagious in a spoof that pits him against Nazi spies. "Gangsters vs. Gestapo -and it is welcome now!" ads proclaimed to a public stunned by the real war's early losses. Also welcome are mugs (William Demarest, Jackie Gleason, and Phil Silvers) who seem to have stepped from Damon Runyon's Guys and Dolls world. Forget the popcorn. Try the cheesecake!

Pennies from Heaven

" I want to live in a world where the song come true" Arthur Parker says. In that world, bank tellers would eagerly hand out sacks of Depression-era dough to him, ever cloud would have a silver lining and Arthur's loveless marriage to Joan would give way to boop boop-a-doop bliss with passionate Eileen. Steve Martin, Bernadette Peters, and Jessica Harper form the triangle of this razzle-dazzler in which lip-synched 1930s songs contrast with characters' lives. Herbert Ross directed Dennis Potter's big-screen adaptation of his landmark BBC TV miniseries, filming on sets that recreate Depression-era artwork and bring a savvy touch to vibrant musical numbers. See Christopher Walken strip to Let's Misbehave. Fall under the spell of a Martin/Peters homage to Astaire and Rogers. Every penny is on the screen and looks like a million.

He's just met stranded American Lee Donley, a chanteuse who can hold her own at a card table. Especially if she's dealing. Off-screen pals James Cagney and Pat O'Brien team for the eighth time in this snappy action comedy. In a role widely cited as putting her on the movie fan's map, Hollywood's "Oomph Girl" Ann Sheridan portrays the wisecracking Lee. Now add superb support, zippy repartee, plus 950 banana trees planted over five backlot acres and the head is on. "You and your 14-karat oomph", Cagney says in the film's final clinch.

The Bad Seed

Rhoda Penmark (Patty McCormack) is a well-mannered 8-year-old little girl - and an efficient, unfeeling killer. And in this spellbinding chronicle of evil, whatever Rhoda wants, she ruthlessly gets. Her mother Christine (Nancy Kelly), reluctantly made to see her offspring's moral blindness at work, is heartrendingly torn between the love for the child she bore and grief for Rhoda's victims. From Maxwell Anderson's stage hit, The Bad Seed ticks like a time bomb under the skillful direction of Mervyn LeRoy, who cast several Broadway production originals, including Kelly (recreating the role that won her a Tony), McCormack and Eileen Heckart. Their harrowing performances captured three of this suspenseful movie's four Academy Award® nominations - and made this thriller one of the great ones. Originally released on Blu-ray 15 years ago from a sub-standard film element, slightly improper aspect ratio, and low bit rate, now this cult-classic looks better than ever, with an all-new HD master created from 4K scans of the original camera negative!

The Wings of Eagles

Commander Frank "Spig "Wead was a pioneer aviator, renowned screenwriter (whose works include John Ford's They Were Expendable) and a man of war. The skies beckon "Spig" to action; a crippling injury, ultimately left, and powerless to act, propelling him to discover the power of his pen. He was talented, driven, flawed, a friend of Ford's – and the subject of this compassionate biography. John Wayne portrays "Spig" and Ford directs "The Wings of Eagles" , which also offers a fascinating glimpse into the ways and world of Ford,: Ward Bond plays movie maker John Dodge, a role modeled on Ford. Maureen O'Hara, Wayne 's five-time costar (including Ford's The Quiet Man), and Dan Dailey (of Ford's 1952 What Price Glory?) play Spig's indomitable, wife Min, and cigar chomping sidekick "Jughead "Carson. The result is a heartfelt tribute with the directorial touch only John Ford could bring to this kind of filmmaking.

Broadway Melody of 1938

During Hollywood's golden era, a top-flight M-G-M musical could be counted on to have bright songs, bright stars, and eye–popping spectacle. Broadway Melody of 1938 is a classic example of the extra level of excellence that was the hallmark of M-G-M's productions.

Heading a cast bursting with talented performers, radiant Eleanor Powell plays a girl who dreams of making it big on Broadway. On her way to the top, she has two memorable encounters: a racehorse named Stargazer, whose winning ways could help to make her dream come true, and a dashing Broadway producer-composer, Robert Taylor, who makes it all happen. Adding to the festivities are dancers George Murphy and Buddy Ebsen, Vaudeville comedian, Willie Howard, and the legendary "red hot momma" Sophie Tucker. As an unforgettable bonus, 15-year-old Judy Garland made movie history with her rendition of "You Made Me Love You" re-arranged as "Dear Mr. Gable" her hymn to Clark Gable that was such a sensation at a studio birthday party for the "King" that studio bosses thought it ideal to include in this film. Other songs include "Yours and Mine," "Follow in My Footsteps" and "Feeling like a Million." Brighten your life with the tuneful extravaganza of Broadway, Melody of 1938!
