Joe Dante Enters the Severin Cellar

Posted December 19, 2025 10:02 PM by Webmaster

Severin has provided a video showing Joe Dante entering its cellar and picking up some of his favorite films on Blu-ray. Some of these films are A Bay of Blood (1971), Unknown World (1951), The Final Programme (1973), and The Ghost (1963).

At the end of the video, Dante, a big fan of physical media, declares: "If you do not have physical media, you do not own anything. If you just think that you bought a picture on Amazon, or you bought a picture from Netflix, or you bought the rights to a picture, just as soon as they start losing their libraries, they're gonna come back to physical media."

Dante's selections are:

The Eurocrypt of Christopher Lee Collection

He remains one of the most beloved horror/fantasy icons in US/UK pop culture history, but Christopher Lee delivered several of the most compelling, acclaimed and bizarre performances of his entire career in 1960s Europe. THE EUROCRYPT OF CHRISTOPHER LEE brings together five of these Lee classics - the 1964 gothic shocker CRYPT OF THE VAMPIRE; the 1964 cult hit CASTLE OF THE LIVING DEAD co-starring an unknown Donald Sutherland; 1962's celebrated SHERLOCK HOLMES AND THE DEADLY NECKLACE; 1967's lurid favorite THE TORTURE CHAMBER OF DR. SADISM and the rarely-seen 1963 oddity CHALLENGE THE DEVIL - with the 24 surviving episodes of the 1971 Film Polski anthology series THEATRE MACABRE hosted by Lee, all remastered from original negative materials with over 10 hours of trailers, rare promos, audio commentaries & vintage interviews, plus the CASTLE OF THE LIVING DEAD soundtrack and an all-new 88-page book by Lee biographer Jonathan Rigby.

Unknown World

In this Cold War variation on Journey To The Center Of The Earth scripted by Oscar® nominee Millard Kaufman (BAD DAY AT BLACK ROCK) – and possibly by blacklisted 2x Academy Award® winner Dalton Trumbo – '50s sci-fi took a startling turn into a grim abyss: As the world teeters on the brink of nuclear annihilation, a renegade scientist (veteran character actor Victor Kilian, uncredited due to his own blacklisting) assembles a team of experts to drill deep into the earth's core in search of a new ecosystem where humanity can survive. Otto Waldis (ATTACK OF THE 50 FOOT WOMAN) and Marilyn Nash (MONSIEUR VERDOUX) co-star in this unjustly forgotten classic produced by visual effects artists Jack Rabin & Irving Block (ROCKETSHIP X-M, KRONOS), directed by Terry O. Morse (GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS!) and filmed in Carlsbad Caverns, now scanned uncut in 4K from the protection internegative for the first time ever.

Lost Soul: The Doomed Journey of Richard Stanley's Island of Dr. Moreau

In 1995, visionary writer/director Richard Stanley ( Hardware, Dust Devil) got the green light for his dream project: An epic adaptation of H.G. Wells' The Island Of Doctor Moreau starring Marlon Brando and Val Kilmer. But only days into production, an unprecedented storm of natural disasters, monstrous egos and disturbing imagery – along with chaos, insanity and witchcraft – would trigger perhaps the most infamous behind-the-scenes catastrophe in modern movie history. Now director/producer David Gregory ( The Theatre Bizarre, Plague Town) reveals the untold story behind "one of the all-time greatest cinematic train wrecks" (Variety) in this "wonderfully weird and gripping" (Entertainment Weekly) documentary featuring never-before-seen footage, startling new interviews with actors Fairuza Balk, Marco Hofschneider and Rob Morrow, studio executives, crew members and Stanley himself.

Footprints

In the most criminally underseen giallo of the '70s, Florinda Bolkan (A LIZARD IN A WOMAN'S SKIN, FLAVIA THE HERETIC) stars as a freelance translator who wakes one morning missing all memory of her past three days. But will a trail of odd clues lead her to a place where perception and identity are never what they seem? Nicoletta Elmi (DEEP RED), Evelyn Stewart (THE SWEET BODY OF DEBORAH), Lila Kedrova (THE TENANT) and Klaus Kinski co-star in this "visually stunning gem" (Mondo Digital) – also known as FOOTPRINTS ON THE MOON – directed by Luigi Bazzoni (THE FIFTH CORD) with cinematography by three-time Oscar winner Vittorio Storaro (THE BIRD WITH THE CRYSTAL PLUMAGE), now scanned in 4K from the original camera negatives.

Castle of Blood

It was begun by Sergio Corbucci (DJANGO), completed by Antonio Margheriti (THE LONG HAIR OF DEATH) and remains one of the true masterpieces of Gothic Horror. Now both versions - the Italian DANZA MACABRA and the U.S. release CASTLE OF BLOOD - can be experienced like never before: When a cynical journalist accepts a wager that he won't survive the night in a haunted castle, it will unlock an odyssey of sexual torment, undead vengeance and a dark seductress (the legendary Barbara Steele) who surrenders the gravest of pleasures. Georges Rivière (THE VIRGIN OF NUREMBERG) co-stars in "a classic cornerstone of the EuroHorror Renaissance" (DVD Savant), scanned in 4K from the original negative and restored by Cinématographique Lyre in collaboration with Severin Films, with 3+ hours of new and archival Special Features that include a selected scene commentary by Steele.

Cushing Curiosities

Description: From Hammer Films to STAR WARS, he remains one of genre films' best-loved actors. Now celebrate six of the most unexpected, rarely seen and decidedly curious performances from the legendary career of PETER CUSHING: Cushing delivers a rare villain turn in the 1960 aviation thriller CONE OF SILENCE. That same year, Cushing brought gentle dignity to The Boulting Brothers' cold-war drama SUSPECT. In 1962's THE MAN WHO FINALLY DIED, Cushing co-stars opposite Stanley Baker as a former Nazi hiding a grave post-war secret. Cushing returns to his iconic role of SHERLOCK HOLMES in these six surviving episodes of the 1968 BBC-TV series. The oft-maligned 1971 shocker BLOODSUCKERS can now be reassessed for the first time in its Restored Extended Version. And Cushing portrays a vampire for the first and only time in 1974's off-the-wall erotic comedy TENDER DRACULA, premiering here in its Director's Cut. Each disc has been mastered from original vault elements with over 16 total hours of trailers, commentaries, vintage interviews, location features and more, plus the all-new 200-page book PETER CUSHING: A PORTRAIT IN SIX SKETCHES by award-winning horror film historian Jonathan Rigby.

The Final Programme

Description: For more than 50 years, it's been called "endlessly inventive" (The Guardian), "audaciously bonkers" (Frame Rated) and "unlike any movie you've ever seen" (B&S About Movies). Now experience the "weird gem that needs to be celebrated" (Mondo Bizarro) in UHD for the first time ever: In this premier adaptation of a Michael Moorcock novel, writer/director/production designer Robert Fuest (THE ABOMINABLE DR. PHIBES, THE DEVIL'S RAIN) unleashes Moorcock's lethal dandy genius Jerry Cornelius (Jon Finch of Hitchcock's FRENZY and Polanski's MACBETH) into a mind-melting conspiracy of mad scientists, pinball nuns and immortal ambisexuals bent on world domination. Jenny Runacre (THE PASSENGER), Sterling Hayden (THE KILLING) and Harry Andrews (THE NIGHTCOMERS) co-star in this "stylish acid comedy" (Boston Phoenix) – also known as LAST DAYS OF MAN ON EARTH – now scanned in 4K from the original camera negative by StudioCanal, with 6+ hours of Special Features that include audio commentaries, video essays and a revealing new on camera interview with Michael Moorcock.

The Ghost

Direct from its triumphant 2025 premiere at the Venice International Film Festival comes "Riccardo Freda's masterpiece" (At the Mansion of Madness) featuring a stunning performance by "the greatest femme fatale of EuroShock cinema" (Through the Shattered Lens) Barbara Steele, now in UHD for the first time ever: In turn-of-the-century Scotland, a young wife (Steele) conspires with her lover to murder her wealthy paralyzed husband. But when the dead spouse's spirit returns, it will unlock a nightmare of spectral terror, sudden violence and depraved vengeance. Peter Baldwin (THE WEEKEND MURDERS) and Harriet Medin (THE WHIP AND THE BODY) co-star in the 1963 classic that re-sets the bar for Italian horror, co-written by Freda and Oreste Biancoli (BICYCLE THIEVES) with an intense score by Francesco De Masi (AN ANGEL FOR SATAN). THE GHOST has been scanned in 4K from the thought-lost original camera negative and restored by Severin Films, curated for this Limited Edition with the 2019 documentary EXECUTIONERS, MASKS, SECRETS: ITALIAN HORROR OF THE 1960s, 4 hours of Special Features and a De Masi Soundtrack Compilation CD.

A Bay of Blood

Description: It redefined the giallo, birthed the slasher genre and remains "the film that changed the face of horror forever" (DVD Talk). Now Severin Films brings 3 separate versions – The English Release, The Original Italian Release and The Italian Re-Release – of this "brutal" (Little White Lies), "disturbing" (Screen Anarchy) and "brilliant" (Slant Magazine) classic from writer/director/cinematographer/maestro Mario Bava to UHD for the first time: When a wealthy countess is murdered for her bayfront real estate, it will lead to the systematic slaughter of ruthless developers, greedy heirs and bad neighbors. Claudine Auger (THUNDERBALL), Luigi Pistilli (YOUR VICE IS A LOCKED ROOM…) and Laura Betti (HATCHET FOR THE HONEYMOON) star in "a film of unbridled ferocity that still shocks today" (Mondo Digital) also known as BLOOD BATH, TWITCH OF THE DEATH NERVE, CARNAGE and LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT PART II – featuring landmark gore effects by 3x Oscar® winner Carlo Rambaldi (ALIEN) and an equally brilliant score by Stelvio Cipriani (BARON BLOOD). All 3 versions have been scanned in 4K from superior vault elements with nearly 5 hours of new & archival Special Features and a Bonus Soundtrack CD.
