Warner Archive has announced its January batch of Blu-ray releases. They are: The Narrow Margin (1952), Red Dust (1932), Manpower (1941), The Verdict (1946), By the Light of the Silvery Moon (1953), For the First Time (1959), and The New Fred and Barney Show (1979).

The Narrow Margin

Description: Pack your bags for one of movie history's greatest trips, a nifty film noir thriller that Time Magazine deemed "worthy of being bracketed in the select group of train thrillers headed by Alfred Hitchcock's The Lady Vanishes." The tracks run direct from Chicago to L.A. The Oscar®-nominated* story, directed by Richard Fleischer (The Boston Strangler) and scripted by his frequent collaborator Earl Felton, zigzags with surprise turns. Film noir favorite Charles McGraw plays a cop guarding a gangster's moll (fellow genre icon Marie Windsor) as she travels west to testify before a grand jury. Also riding the Pullmans: determined hitmen who know the moll is on the train, but don't know what she looks like. All aboard

Red Dust

Description: In Red Dust, Clark Gable and Jean Harlow go together like thunder and lightning. As the hard-driving, hard-living overseer of a rubber plantation in Indochina, Gable has never been more than the unwitting prey of wily women, nor more aggressively male. Harlow, playing a prostitute on the run from Saigon authorities, is vulnerable yet tough. From the first moment Vantine (Harlow) takes refuge on the plantation run by Carson (Gable), he sizes her up as an easy mark for his virile charm. But when a research engineer (Gene Raymond) and his elegant wife Barbara (Mary Astor) appear on the scene, Carson falls hard for the beautiful Barbara, discarding Vantine as nothing more than a "cute little trick." The steamy rivalry between the women soon boils into a jealous rage – with violent consequences. Oscar®-winning Director Victor Fleming (Gone with The Wind, 1939) deftly orchestrates the script's tense drama and hilarious erotic comedy, helping Gable and Harlow turn Red Dust into pure Pre-Code gold.

Manpower

Description: Iconic screen tough guys Edward G. Robinson and George Raft square off for hard-hitting drama, portraying utility company workers tough enough to defy death and each other while working power lines more treacherous than snakes. It will take some kind of woman to stand up to that much manpower. Luckily, screen goddess Marlene Dietrich is just that kind of woman. She plays an ex-con and nightclub floozy who marries one of the men -- but falls hard for the other. With three great stars and plenty of breathtaking high-tower action under the taut, muscular direction of Raoul Walsh (White Heat, High Sierra), Manpower is "a cinematic depth charge" (Bosley Crowther, The New York Times).

The Verdict

Description: Superintendent Grodman of Scotland Yard built an airtight case into a noose around a killer's neck. Then, too late, evidence exonerates the hanged man. Grodman retires in shame. Then a new case -a diabolical locked-room murder- gives Grodman the chance to redeem himself. Sydney Greenstreet and Peter Lorre, whose charismatic screen teamings began with The Maltese Falcon and continued through many beloved films during the 1940s, play Grodman and his effete artist comrade, hunting for clues in the fog-bound, gaslit streets of 1890 London. Memorable for its stars, chilling atmosphere and unexpected turns, The Verdict also marked the feature-film debut of noted director Don Siegel (Dirty Harry)

By the Light of the Silvery Moon

Description: In an age when sequels were not the norm, Warner Bros.' 1951 Technicolor musical On Moonlight Bay was a huge success with audiences and critics alike. Two years later, the cast was brought together for this equally-successful follow-up focusing on the Winfield family. Doris Day and Gordon MacRae reprise their starring roles in this moonlit Technicolor confection, which picks up soon after the first film ended. Leon Ames, Rosemary DeCamp, Mary Wickes and Billy Gray rejoin them in this remembrance of post-World War I-era Americana. There's a new array of nine nostalgic standards -- and a strong emphasis on production numbers. Doris and Gordon spin through the Winfield kitchen to "Ain't We Got Fun," Doris crows "King Chanticleer" at a stage pageant, and the whole town heads to Miller's Pond and laces up the ice skates for the title-tune finale. Like its predecessor, this draws from Booth Tarkington's Penrod stories for its portraits of heartland mirth, values and "warm hearts, cold feet" romance. Ain't we got fun? You bet we have!

  • NEW 4K RESTORATION FROM THE ORIGINAL TECHNICOLOR CAMERA NEGATIVE
  • Classic WB cartoon "FROM A TO Zzzzz"
  • Classic WB comedy shorts:
