The British Film Institute has provided an exclusive trailer for its new restoration of Terence Davies' The House of Mirth (2000), starring Gillian Anderson, Dan Aykroyd, Eleanor Bron, Terry Kinney, and Anthony LaPaglia. A Blu-ray release of it will arrive on the market on November 24.

Description: Adapted from Edith Wharton's classic novel, Terence Davies' THE HOUSE OF MIRTH (2000) is a tragic love story set against a background of wealth and social hypocrisy in turn of the century New York. It stars Gillian Anderson who gives an acclaimed performance as Lily Bart, a ravishing young socialite at the height of her success and looking to make a good marriage. Her beauty and charm attract unwelcome interest and jealousy, and she quickly discovers the precariousness of her position, drawn into a downward spiral when her honour and her love for Lawrence Selden (Eric Stoltz) prevent her from accepting the advances of a wealthy banker. The film proved Terence Davies a master of period filmmaking – and literary adaptation – and deserves to be regarded as one of the best British features of its era. Now newly re-mastered, it will be re-released in cinemas in the UK and Ireland by BFI Distribution on 24 October 2025,
THE HOUSE OF MIRTH features an all-star cast. Alongside Gillian Anderson and Eric Stoltz are Laura Linney, Dan Aykroyd, Anthony LaPaglia, Jodhi May and Elizabeth McGovern. Gillian Anderson won Best Actress at the British Independent Film Awards in 2000 and the film was nominated for a BAFTA for Best British Film and Best Costume Design.
Alongside the UK and Ireland release, the film is a centrepiece of the BFI's forthcoming major celebration of Terence Davies, LOVE. SEX. RELIGION. DEATH. THE COMPLETE FILMS OF TERENCE DAVIES. This extensive BFI Southbank season running from 20 October – 30 November programmed by BFI Chief Executive Ben Roberts, will provide a comprehensive journey through Davies' body of work, alongside a free exhibition curated by Edge Hill University from 1 – 30 November and a special subscription collection streaming on BFI Player from 6 October. The recently discovered early short film BOOGIE (c.1980) will also be screened for the first time since being found among personal items donated from Davies' estate to Edge Hill, who hold and care for the Terence Davies Archive.
