Eureka Entertainment has announced its November batch of 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray releases. They are: La Notte (1961), Fantomas Returns!: The Fantomas Trilogy (1964-1967), Rio Lobo (1970), and Shogun's Samurai (1978).

La Notte 4K Blu-ray

Description: One of the masterworks of 1960s cinema, La Notte (The Night) marked yet another development in the continuous stylistic evolution of its director, Michelangelo Antonioni — even as it solidified his reputation as one of the greatest artists of the twentieth century. La Notte is Antonioni's Twilight of the Gods, but composed in cinematic terms. Observed from a crane-shot, it's a sprawling study of Italy's upper middle-class; seen in close-up, it's an x-ray of a relationship on the brink of collapse.

Two of the giants of film acting come together as a married couple living in crisis: Marcello Mastroianni (La dolce vita, 8 1/2) and Jeanne Moreau (Jules et Jim, Bay of Angels). He is a renowned author and "public intellectual"; she is "the wife." Over the course of one day and the night into which it inevitably bleeds, the pair will come to re-examine their emotional bonds and grapple with the question of whether love and communication are even possible in a world built out of profligate idylls and sexual hysteria.

Photographed in rapturous black-and-white by the great Gianni di Venanzo (8 1/2, Giulietta degli spiriti), La Notte is a film about the yawning caverns that can open up between people who were once in love, and the difficulty of trying to fix something that may be irrevocably broken. The Masters of Cinema Series is proud to present Michelangelo Antonioni's haunted odyssey for the first time anywhere in the world on 4K Blu-ray.

Fantomas Returns!: The Fantomas Trilogy, 1964-1967

Box set release featuring:

Fantômas
Fantômas Unleashed
Fantômas vs Scotland Yard

Created by crime writers Marcel Allain and Pierre Souvestre, the criminal mastermind Fantômas is best known outside of France as the antagonist of the silent serial that bears his name, directed by early cinematic pioneer Louis Feuillade. Within France, though, he is most famously associated with André Hunebelle's beloved Fantômas trilogy. Released between 1964 and 1967, Hunebelle's films revived the character with a comedic twist in the era of four-colour comic books, Bondmania and a boom in French popular cinema.

In the first film of the trilogy, Fantômas seeks revenge on Jérôme Fandor (both played by Jean Marais in dual roles) after the journalist publishes an unflattering article about him. The master of disguise begins by framing Fandor for a series of crimes before moving on to impersonate Juve (Louis de Funès), bumbling commissaire of the Parisian police. In Fantômas Unleashed, the villain kidnaps scientists to work on a new super weapon, leading Fandor and Juve on a trip to Rome in an attempt to thwart his plans. Finally, Fantômas vs Scotland Yard transports Fandor and Juve to an old dark house when Fantômas decides to tax the rich – beginning with the wealthy owner of a Scottish castle, Lord McRashley (Jean-Roger Caussimon).

Drawing on a huge range of influences, from The Pink Panther and James Bond to Silver Age superheroes and Dr Mabuse, Hunebelle's Fantômas films are colourful adventures featuring breathtaking stuntwork, sweeping scores by Michel Magne and standout performances by comedian Louis de Funès, one of the most beloved figures in the history of French cinema. The Masters of Cinema series is proud to present the Fantômas trilogy on Blu-ray for the first time on home video in the UK.

Rio Lobo

Rio Lobo is the last film by Howard Hawks, a titan of American cinema and the director of a litany of undisputed classics, including Scarface, Only Angels Have Wings, The Big Sleep and Monkey Business. Like his previous films Red River, The Big Sky and Rio Bravo, it is an ode to the Old West – a staunchly traditionalist tale of the frontier led by the genre's biggest star, John Wayne.

Wayne stars as Colonel Cord McNally of the Union army, who loses a close friend during a raid on a Union payroll train carried out by a group of Confederates under the leadership of Captain Pierre Cordana (Jorge Rivero) and Sergeant Tuscarora Phillips (Christopher Mitchum). McNally suspects that he and his men were betrayed by traitors within the Union, setting in motion a quest for revenge that will continue even after the Civil War is over – and which will bring McNally into a bitter conflict with ruthless landowner Ketcham (Victor French) and "Blue Tom" Hendricks (Mike Henry), the corrupt sheriff of Rio Lobo, Texas.

By 1970, the Western genre was rapidly changing. In America, Revisionist Westerns – typified by the likes of The Wild Bunch, Little Big Man and Soldier Blue – were questioning the established mythology of the West, while Italy's morally grey Spaghetti Westerns were at the height of their international popularity. Meanwhile, Rio Lobo stood firm in tradition as Hawks' final Western – and now joins the Masters of Cinema series.

Special Features and Technical Specs:
  • RESTORED BY PARAMOUNT PICTURES
  • Original English mono audio
  • Optional DTS HD-MA 5.1 audio
  • Optional English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing
  • Back to the Old West – new interview on Rio Lobo with Western scholar Austin Fisher, author of Radical Frontiers in the Spaghetti Western
  • New interview with film historian Sheldon Hall on the career of director Howard Hawks

Shogun's Samurai

Shogun's Samurai – also known as The Yagyu Clan Conspiracy – is one of Kinji Fukasaku's most revered forays into the chanbara or samurai genre: a twisting tale of political intrigue and bloody betrayal starring Kinnosuke Yorozuya (The Fall of Ako Castle), Hiroki Matsukata (Battles Without Honor and Humanity) and the incomparable Shinichi "Sonny" Chiba (The Street Fighter) in its lead roles.

During the Edo period, shogun Hidetada Tokugawa is killed, poisoned by an unknown assailant. In the aftermath of his death, a vicious power struggle breaks out between his two sons Tadanaga (Teruhiko Saigo) and Iemitsu (Matsukata), who is suspected of having arranged his father's murder. As the conflict between the two brothers intensifies and their father's former allies are forced to choose sides, samurai Munenori Yagyu (Yorozuya) and his own sons Jubei (Chiba) and Munefuyu (Kentaro Kudo) become embroiled in the conflict until it reaches its bitter end.

Featuring Chiba's first portrayal of the legendary samurai Jubei Mitsuyoshi Yagyu (a character he would later return to in Fukasaku's Samurai Reincarnation), Shogun's Samurai stands with The Fall of Ako Castle as one of its director's finest and most accomplished samurai epics. The Masters of Cinema is proud to present this landmark chanbara film on Blu-ray for the first time in the UK.
