Blu-ray Sales: August 17-23: How to Train Your Dragon Still Flying High in Week Two

For the week that ended on August 23rd, Universal Pictures Home Entertainment's How to Train Your Dragon (2025) remained on top of the Blu-ray-only, overall packaged media and UHD Sellers charts in its second week. A remake of the 2010 animated film of the same name, this new version boasted the same directors and blended live-action human performances (including actor Gerard Butler in a reprise of his voice role) with CGI-animated dragons. It opened in June 2025 to positive reviews and perhaps surprisingly, has outperformed all the fully-animated films in the series, with over $262 million domestically and now, over $630 million worldwide. This week, How to Train Your Dragon had an HD share of 52%, with 18% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.

Staying in second place on the Blu-ray-only and UHD Sellers charts in its fourth week is Walt Disney Home Entertainment's Thunderbolts*. The 36th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe opened in early May 2025 and naturally, it topped the box office with over $74 million. However, though it saw positive reviews and went on to make over $190 million domestically and over $382 million worldwide, those numbers still put the film in the bottom ten MCU films and behind the earlier 2025 release of Captain America: Brave New World. This week, Thunderbolts* sold 51% as many Blu-ray units as How to Train Your Dragon, with an HD share of 63% and 23% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.

And staying in third place on the Blu-ray-only chart in its second week is Warner Bros. Home Entertainment's The Accountant 2. While few would have anticipated a sequel to the 2016 film The Accountant almost a decade later, it did go before the cameras in 2024 with multiple members of the cast returning. Unfortunately, when it opened in April 2025, it came in third place at the box office, eventually finishing its theatrical run with over $65 million domestically and just over $37 million internationally, only cracking $103 million worldwide. This week, The Accountant 2 sold 37% as many Blu-ray units as How to Train Your Dragon, with an HD share of 43% and 8% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.

Elsewhere on the charts, the week's top new release, A24's Bring Her Back, debuted at No. 7, between Kino Lorber's 4K UHD upgrades for Happy Gilmore and Xanadu (1980) at Nos. 6 and 8. Sony Pictures Home Entertainment's The Boys: Season 4 (2024) debuted at No. 10, while outside the top ten, Kino's Blu-ray of Repossessed came in at No. 15.

Elsewhere on the UHD Sellers chart, Kino's Coneheads 4K came in at No. 12, while Universal's Harvey 4K (1950) came in at No. 13. Finally, Shout Factory's Blaxploitation Classics Vol. 2 4K (1970-1975) box set, containing Cotton Comes to Harlem 4K, Slaughter 4K (1972), Slaughter's Big Rip-Off 4K, Foxy Brown 4K, Bucktown 4K and Friday Foster 4K, came in at No. 19.
